I need a beefy hard use folder that's under $75. Not including cold steel, I have my fair share of cold steel blades. :)

buck marksman......haven't tried it out on hard using, but seems to be marketed that way. it's close to the price point, a bit over. mid 80's range....on some sites.

Lol was gonna suggest one, then saw your next sentence.
Still... just so ya know, i got my all 3 of my code 4(spear, clip & tanto point) for less than $75 each ;)

Oh and you can try Ganzo with their "Axis" like lock. I've seen video of people batoning with it, no problem, if that's your kind of hard use. You can probably get 4-5 Ganzo for $75.

If you don't have a problem with companies stealing designs, then Ganzo would probably be OK. Many people (like myself) avoid companies like that.

What kind of hard-use tasks are you thinking, btw? We could probably narrow down some choices for you better.

Kershaw Link great warranty and $10 to replace the blade if it breaks. Under $45.

Yup. Putting aside the fact that Ganzo is counterfeiting the axis lock, you also don't get a warranty with their knives. $75 is a decent sized budget. You can even get some USA made knives like ones from Kershaw. A used Griptilian may not be out of the question. Besides the Ontario Rat 1, also look at the Utillitac II. Nice tough EDC for ~$25.

I'm not sure, but I think the Benchmade Griptilians can be had in that price range. Axis locks with steel liners should hold up to a bit of hard work.

It's funny, this price is right in the middle of my knife 'dead zone' as far as what I would normally buy. I usually stay around the $20-40, and then jump to the $125-250 price range. I don't know why, exactly, but I've just now realized I have this tendancy.

^ True for me as well! You can absolutely find a second-hand grip for under $75 and it will eat hard work for breakfast.

Lets NOT turn this into a politicized discussion. Keep it on the cost and quality of the knives themselves.

2 RAT 1s one in each pocket

Two (2) RAT-1s will be very reliable and leave you enough money to send one or both in for warranty should it be necessary which, given my experiences with the knives, should not be needed as they seem to hold up very well. On the outside chance that you do need warranty service - it's a good company.

If you already have a gaggle of CS knives, you may already have a CS Large Voyager which, based upon my experiences, is a good hard use folder. The AUS-8 close-outs almost allowed for, like the RAT-1s, a back-up for the back-up within your budget.

I have been using a CRKT Folding Razel as my work knife for about a year now. It was semi-retired for a while.

I haven't checked prices on that auction site for them, but I wouldn't pay more than $75 for a used one, since they sold for 80 when new (IIRC).

Edge retention is nothing to cheer about, but they are not assisted, the liner is almost as thick as the blade, and the LAWKS gives one an extra feeling of confidence, by blocking the liner while in use, so it cannot move away from the tang face.

CRKT Foresight is an absolute beast of a knife - street price is usually around $65-$70. MSRP is $140, but is meaningless, of course. I started to say that if you are located somewhere between Durham and Greensboro, I'd meet you somewhere and let you check mine out (it's not for sale) but then I saw you are located in .... Wyoming!

I love the Ontario Rat 1, but not sure I'd consider it 'hard use', although mine has held up extremely well! I had to cut PVC plumbing pipe with it one time in a pinch, and it is none the worse for wear!

You might want to check out Real Steel, too, H6 or H7 or similar. Maybe some of the beefier, less expensive Kizers, too.
