Best hard use knife That..

You can order online and have it in your hand in 7-10 days and replace it just as quick if need be? Not something that you might find on the used market or luck on to on Ebay, but very available? AND, Would Ranger Knives meet those expectations? Other Options? Thanks

If it is a GOOD hard use knife... why would you have to worry about replacing it? It should last you a lifetime.

I think of it as a knife, others might not.

12 inch, 12 oz, H.I. AK. Stout for hell. Almost always same/next day shipping from Reno.

Yeah that TAK doesnt get enough respect IMO. It has replaced my other 2 bush craft knives that I use to carry (Buck119 and Pilot Survival knife). Although I do love that Pilots Survival knife dearly.

Definitions of hard use vary but Fallkniven would be my first stop.

The TAK mentioned above is an interesting choice. Leaving friendships, the vividness of newness and brand loyalty out of it, I'm faced with the fact that a TAK in D2 is only 8 quid more to me than an RC4 in 1095. If hard use means smack it with a hammer I probably wouldn't chose the TAK over it. If hard use means keep on cutting down amongst the grime and slime I'd spend those paltry 8 quid.

For a big replaceable value bowie I think you'd have to be doing something pretty dumb to bust the new CS Recon Scout. Those Ontario Generation IIs linked to above look interesting too. Seems like someone has been listening to enthusiasts comments on grinds.

Depending on how hard the use will be (ie. heavy but reasonable use or heavy abuse like chopping rocks for the fun of it), a Fällkniven A1 and even A2 could be a good choice. But if you're out to really beat the knife senseless without any reason, then I wouldn't go with Fällkniven, but rather something much cheaper. The Ka-Bar Heavy Bowies would be cheap and good.

Ranger Knives I would otherwise recommend, but right now with the Ontario merge going on, the regular production models are not yet available.

I would not plan on replacing it but stuff happens, things get misplaced or swiped, I may want to equip a few different vehicles or stock emergency stashes here and there. I just want something replaceable if the need arises.

I like to keep a Bug out bag in several location because if the SHTF, a person may not be anywhere near home. I can't afford to stash a Busse in ten different locations.:D

Thanks again, this sure gives me a bunch of options. I am trying to equip my kids with a few items that they wouldn't buy themselves as well.

Try a Schrade Sharpfinger (for small stuff) and the aforementiones machete (if you're in brush, jungle, or desert) of an axe (if you're in the woods).

Fallkniven for me. I do love me some Rangers, but as Elen said, with the merger still in the works they are tough to come buy.

udtjim,

I asked this question in slightly different fashion a few weeks ago. I was looking for information about the Pilot's knife (Ontario or Camillus) for my wife's and son's bail out bags. Not too pricey that you feel bad it sits there, but a solid choice. Wanted to keep the cost down.
But Several people suggested I look at the Blackjack Grunt instead. Well I got one Saturday, was well as a Pilot's knife, (thanks Knifegunnut!) and I am very impressed with it. Sharp, solid and tough as hell. And for $20, you cant go wrong. I used it Saturday to remove a couple of troublesome roots in yard, prune some dead branches from our Pear and Apple trees, split a couple of logs with it, washed it and was still able to slice up a tomato for my lunchtime sandwhich.. :) Hands down it is one of the better production knives I have used, and I think it is a solid choice for most anyone.

Ranger knifes are exceptional, but I don't know what they'll be like now that Ontario has taken over the production. I love my RD-9. My TAK-1 I got used is a beater, and is also a stong choice, as is the RC-3, and RAT-3. All three are easily available. And you really can't go wrong choosing any of them.

I saw a Sharpfinger design knife at K-Mart a few days ago for 20.00. It was a dead ringer for the Schrade and it is stamped Made in the USA. I don't know who makes it but I think they call them outdoor life. I think they are 420 stainless instead of carbon though.

Being a die hard Buck fan, how about the Nighthawk? I`ve put my Buck 119 through hell and back and not broke it!

Fallkniven!

I never thought of the Fallknivens as "hard use" knives until I saw Noss' knife destruction test of the A-1. That thing is one tough knife!

I have an F-1 and could live with it as my only knife if need be. I'll be picking up one of the larger ones in the future (when I get done buying the Busses I want!).

Stay sharp,

I had a Nighthawk and really liked it. Remember when I said stuff happens? I dropped it in a lake while canoeing. I was trying to cut a fishing line that was tangled in a bush and splash, it was gone. My son would not jump in and look for it. Darn Kid.

I like the Fallknivens if I could ever master sharpening those darn convex edges. Oh well, there is siguy.

Considering your user name and avatar, I'm very surprised you couldn't retrieve a knife lost in a lake....

The convex edge is a thing worth mastering, in my opinion. I liked the convex blades I bought so much, I ended up buying a cheap 1" x 30" belt sander so I could put a convex edge on some of my other flat-ground knives.

What about the Cold Steel Bushman? Pretty good knife by all acounts, although I've never tried one. But, like the Grunt, hard to beat for the price.

I have had great users that fit those criteria from the RAT guys, TOPS knives, Cold Steel, and military knives like the Air Force Survival and Kabar. Lots of great choices out there. Decide what you need a knife to do and select one :)
