"Best in Show": knife judging

Any pointers to other top end makers who have done a similar thing would also be very welcome ....

I don't know of any other makers who have made it a formalized annual process as Jerry has done. But a good many makers at all levels have had knives purchased "off the belt" by customers looking for working knife.

Having said that I was very taken with the idea that Jerry Fisk makes a "cutter" every year to demonstrate what his knives can do .... can anyone direct me to a write up or review of this ?

Peter unfortunately there's been no write-up or formal review to my knowledge other than a few comments that Jerry's show attendees have made. But you're on to something, perhaps next year we could run Jerry's 2011 cutter through an official series of tests and I could report back in a thread. Or, as several makers always bring their cutters perhaps we could test them all. Might even make an interesting magazine article. We are always looking for new show activities. That's probably why Jerry has always been able to keep his show fresh and interesting.

Anyway, here's a couple other annual Fisk cutters that I happen to have photos of (05, 07) and some "goof ball" trying to use one at Jerry's show.
I have found they always perform to a high degree but all have a little different feel.

RJ: My comments were not directed at you, each knife situation is unique and I appreciate your honesty about the situation.

if there is nothing lose, other than the competition itself, I don't see how entering your knives can do anything but expose the judges to your philosophies of knife making, Mr. Fowler.

Simply entering your knives wouldn't make you a sell out, and if you lose every time- so what? At least the judges have been exposed to your approach to knife making and perhaps the next guy who travels the same path as you could win and that win might add credence to your approach for the general public.

Seems that the knife world is trend driven as much as any, and it's anybody's guess as to where and when those trends might shift.

Yes, that was the way I meant it but did not know for sure that we were on the same page. Thank You!
