It made me chuckle when the OP said we can rule out those two companies, as I'm sure he did it to poke the bear...& because he genuinely has a negative opinion of them. As long as statements like that aren't followed up with more/deeper hater-type remarks, I don't see any harm in it....just his opinion, and he's asking for our opinions on the subject. Personally, I don't know a whole lot about either company, though I've had a few cool CRKT folders & a few cool little fixed blades from Cold Steel. Though I will add that strictly personally, I don't "get" Cold Steel knives for the most part...I just don't quite dig the aesthetics of a lot of them....I guess because I tend to like less tactical designs & materials, & prefer richer scale materials & different steels than CS tends to use in their knives....but I know a ton of super smart men really like their stuff, & I respect the hell out of that.
I vote for Survive Knives, in terms of Production knives....made in U.S. by U.S. Americans, and they now even only use U.S. steels...& I'm assuming all of the rest of their knife/sheath materials are U.S. only....I believe that's correct. The materials themselves are high end like CPM-3V, CPM-20CV, lots of micartas and G10s, & well built Kydex sheaths (I wish they offered leather!!)...& their prices are very competitive....they just take forever to get your hands on, unless you're willing to pay the higher 3rd party prices!
I really vote for all of the great custom fixed blade (lots of great folder-makers too, just not my bag) makers here on BF...aside from Survive, everything I buy these days comes from their talented hands/minds.
