Best Natural Materials...

Now for another sweety...
California Buckeye Burl by Shawn McIntyre. The hamon is subtle but very well executed. You can't see it from these pics but the Japanese call it suguha with nezumi ashi (straight hamon with rat's legs). I like it. :p

That Tuxedo fighter is the nicest Jerry Fisk knife that I have ever seen, bar none!

You should be very pleased!

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Shawn McIntyre sure makes a good looking knife. I like his stuff:thumbup:

Thanks for starting this incredible thread!
Yimeng,You look good in Gold.Welcome.:D

All that contributed by posting these amazing knives.

these are just
FAAAABULOUS!!!

I am especially amazed at the way the colors on the ivory do not clash with the patterns on the damascus. We could never have that.

Of course, anyone who doesn't like these girlyknives could, I'm sure, find a different forum--maybe one that deals with more manly-man pursuits. Or you could just get a real penis.

Seriously, what a great thread.

Because, of course, EVERYBODY knows that's what this knifenut thing is really all about;) ;) .

Seriously though, I gotta stop looking at this thread... lest my eyes roll to the back of my head and I start to convulse.:D

Trisak, I like the natural materials on too, especially on your knives.

we all know of the great use of Stag that goes into many a hunter, fighter or Bowie but there are many other "bone" materials that can be used by knifemakers when creating either using or "art" knives. Some of these are presented below

this first, by Brian Lyttle, is a handle and stand (scrimmed with an Elk image) using Elk bone

standard

this handle is carved from a moose antler by Native Canadian artist Stan Hill

standard

Gunnar Momcilovic of Norway created a utility knive using Italian Cow bone

standard

while many don't revere Giraffe, probably because many times the colors become somewhat strange and artificial here are a few examples of how nice the material is

Bob Crowder did a beautiful job in replacing some cracked wood scales on a mini bowie with this honey giraffe bone

standard

Stan Fujisaka and Judy Beaver combined their talents and used this colored giraffe bone to fit nicely with the engraved titanium bolsters

standard

Rob Brown, a South African maker, uses native Giraffe bone just as other makers would use Stag

standard

and Brian Lyttle obtains some natuarally raised Buffalo bone in his Alberta home for this little utility hunter

standard

there is certainly a wide range of natural bone materials that make for great knife handles

Thanks Murray. Outstanding knives!

Coop

Murray,
The Stan Hill carved moose antler handle is wild and cool.
Very nice,as are the others.

Doug:)

then of course, I did forget one of the coolest uses of Giraffe bone that I have--by Josef Rusnak. As you can see the coloration in this is wonderful and quite matched on each side.

When this thread began, it looked like the emphasis was on the handles so I rephotographed some of the knives with only the handle being the subject Easier to get the full detail of the handle when not having to consider the blade which is of much greater reflectance value.

However, it looks like some full knives are being emphasized so I'll post a few more that inlcude blades although I do have more handles to edit and some done that have not been posted.

here are three pearls, JW Smith, Frank Centofante (Black Lip) and Harvey McBurnette (Goldlip)

off to mow the lawn but will come back to play later.

Wonderful knives and photos Murray. I agree that giraffe bone can be very appealing when used well. There's more to it than simply material choice. Thanks for sharing those.

from small folders to large boot/daggers, pearl is always stunning like this boot knife by Jim Ence

standard

From the sea comes paua shell in this handle by Billy Kojetin of S. Africa

standard

Ron Gaston used Abalone and some neat filework filled with black epoxy

standard

while Chris Owens used Abalone with more color in this damascus interframe folder

standard

time for a rest now but there will be more to come

I know my work doesn't compare to the knives posted but here's a few
1)bowie with desert ironwood for the handle;

a folder i made for my father's b-day using giraffe bone

and a tanto using goncalo alves for the sheath etc.

More work to brighten up the place.

Warren Osborne has a knack for complex simplicity. Some type of jasper stone.

Dietmar Kressler used ivory with some wispy coloring in it.

Schuyler Lovestrand used some gnarly stag and added some gnarly filework.

Old. I mean REALLY old knife from an icon. Pre-etched logo.

Yeah, I'm going to have to agree with Steven here, also the nicest Fisk I ever saw too, I'd trade several nice knives for that one. :)

I realized I have a few more pics to post, some really nice fossil ivory on a 13" Hanson bowie, the unshown side has a lot of greenish blue on it, but since I'm a lazy bastard, it will remain unshown, :) there's an Embretson folder, the pearl is unreal, but I had trouble really getting it to show in a picture. Oh well, it's a very nice folder. Some rare red bark ivory on a Bradshaw folding bowie, neat stuff, also some nice Claro Walnut on a Bradshaw small bowie. Guess I'll end for tonight with really cool stag on a Dunn hunter.

are folks having problems with my images? Coop has suggested I try another method of providing the links and I'll be doing this in the future as long as I remember but I have cleaned TIF's a few times and the images come up ok here but wondered if it was a temporary glitch or a continuing problem. have been working on more images but am now also trying to figure out something with Fototimes FotoAlbum so won't have anything up for a few days probably
