I love Alone in the Wilderness, but it is not a "survival" video. It is more of a "wilderness living" video.

There are a couple of old videos I rented back in the early 90's that I wish I could remember the titles of. They were both "documentary" style, not dramas. One was about an older businessman who decided to let his business get by without him for a year. He flew his little plane into the bush, stowed it for the winter, built a cabin to live in.

Another was about a trapper making and living in a log cabin. One scene I remember is him comming back from checking his line to find that snowmobilers had "visited" and eaten a lot of his einter stores, leaving a note and some beer in return.

Anybody know these titles?

How about Cold River.

A man packs up his daughter and son and takes them for a camping trip in the middle of winter, he has a heart attack and dies leaving the children to fend for themselves. Not only do the children have to survive the elements they also encounter a two legged predator. My Grandma and I used to watch this movie every Christmas.

For anyone who hasn't seen it, I recomend watching it.

Yeah the book, Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen was made into a movie called "A Cry in the Wild". My wife uses the book in her 7th/8th grade literature classes and they watch the movie after reading the book.

I like "the Edge" as well.

ROCK6

Ah yes, Paulsen can write.
He puts you right there.

"Alone in the Wilderness", the story about Dick Proenneke and his survival in the Alaskan wilderness. Originally aired on PBS and is available on DVD. Dick's journals and photographs are available in book form under the title, "One Man's Wilderness". There's no hollywood actors in the film but it's the most entertaining and authentic survival movie I've seen.

Great suggestion!
For those that have not seen this you are in for a treat.
No blazin guns, fast action, or near death drama.
Just steady, informative, and well made (but technologically dated).
If you have ever daydreamed about going it alone in the wilderness this guy does it all. :)

Disagree,

Anyone living the way he did where he did makes it wilderness survival. He hunts, traps and defends himself against the environment with minimal contact with the outside world for near 30 yrs.

He just does it at a higher and more permanent level. Whats the old saying "the better you are the easier you make it look".
Wilderness living involves contractors, money, monthly trips to the market, home schooling, composting toilets, generators and fly in Dr's.

Make no mistake what he did was pure survival and without the hollywood hype.

Is that the old movie where the guy canoes on an lake in Alaska and builds a cabin? He even makes the handles for his tools. Great movie. He was a real craftsman.

Yes... ;)
Some of the shots were obviously staged (reenacted) as he was subject, director, and camera man.

A second "return" visit (movie) made years later before his death were edited with file footage I believe.

Skammer,

You may want to read the book Dick wrote, One Man's Wilderness, which provides significantly more detail than the video of Alone in the Wilderness. He started out with several hundred pounds of gear and supplies, and Babe the pilot came in with supplies every couple of weeks. I'm not saying he couldn't have "survived," but in fact he was regularly resupplied and checked on throughout his time up there. That isn't survival by any reasonable definition. I'm not knocking him at all. I would love to do the exact thing. Proennecke was a true craftsman and he built that cabin like he was crafting fine furniture.

The second video is Alaska: Silence and Solitude. I don't think it is quite as good. The producer tries to impose his ideas, such as an opposition to hunting, on Dick, who by that time was pretty old. (Dick clearly relied on hunting, but was't a big fan of "sport" hunters.)

At the end of the day than man spent 30yrs in a wilderness that would kill most people today and with gear few of us would choose today. Alaska is one of the worst environments to survive in.

It was survival by every definition. I have been there and it is no picnic even for the toughest.

I read the book.

Agree to disagree.
