Best Survival Movies

To say that "Quest for Fire" and "Clan of the cave Bear" are survival movies is an understatement. Neolithic life was survival. You had to survive being born, disease, weather, predators, other tribes. Everything you possessed had to me manufactured or crafted by you or someone in your group. Flint tipped weapons and tools, clothing and shelters all crafted by hand. Your survival depended on hunting and gathering every scrap of food. .Being somewhere in the middle of the food chain kept you constantly alert. Life revolved around following the herds, moving to seasonal camps, defending your hunting grounds, seeking out resources. Just think what you could learn about plants, animals and survival from our ancestors. We prepare for survival eventualities but these people lived it every day.

It certainly was but is apples and oranges to today. They had the mental capacity of a 2 yr old and thus must be judged accordingly.

The way I see it survival is not just about waking up but thriving and making things better. Every animal survives, we live, its what makes us different, not better but different.

Same brains and capacities as today's people...not as much collected/combined knowledge as we have, but just as smart, clever, and resourceful as today's folks. The "caveman" myth--it's a myth.

Actually, they were probably smarter and more mentally sharp then we are. All those centuries of genetic degradation hadn't happened yet. Amazing thing is, man actually came out of the "stone knives and bearskins" phase pretty quick. Just about as soon as men learned to sustain fire, they began working metals.

"The Edge"
I can't think of the name of the caveman one. "Clan of the Cave Bear" maybe?

The fact people believed their bodies evolved but their brains were of todays standard is suspect, I know too many cavemen that support my theory:). The IQ was there kind of or the seeds of IQ but they were slow on the uptake.
Not convinced.

One thing is for sure humans had rapid brain development post Neolithic.

??? We are DEVO!

FLIX said:
I'm not saying he couldn't have "survived," but in fact he was regularly resupplied and checked on throughout his time up there.

I gotta agree with Flix on this point. Perhaps Proenneke would have been in a good position to endure survival conditions, had it come to that. But it clearly seemed he avoided such situations and accumulated as much gear as could be reasonably hauled out there as possible, over the course of several plane trips depicted in the video. There's no doubt his comfort level was different than, say, Zsa Zsa Gabor. But he never gave the impression that he was interested in just surviving, but rather in thriving. Primitive by many standards, no doubt, but not quite the direness that I would consider survival conditions.

Watched "The Edge." Pretty cool movie. I liked how Hopkins used different ways to do things and to keep his head screwed on right during it all.

Anyhoo, thanks for this thread.

People arent getting it.

Even if you have a motor home with a internet access and a McDonalds up there. Where he was, when you step out the door its survival.

You are splitting hairs as to some basic tools and what form of primitive shelter he resides in. To say otherwise flys in the face of all that went before to Alaska and the Klondike eduring the harshest of environments in the last frontier.

Its survival.
