As a newbie, I wondering what is the BEST tactical knife?????? The largest I would want to consider is 15 inches. All suggestions appreciated.

vic Soldier...

LoL.

Excellent choice. Team that up with a Fällkniven F1 or a BRKT Bravo 1 and you are set.

Most soldiers just fight their MRE. If you need a knife to fight the enemy Uncle Sam has really let you down. If he is that close I doubt that you will have time to pull your knife since he already is pointing his AK47 at you.

i m guessin' that by BEST, you probably mean...
Big
Egotistical
Sharp
Tool

take your pick!
mind you, plenty would fit the description.
generally, one pay's more for the fancier stuff beyond the standard kbars (finishes 'n material charges adds to the final bill).
but lets speak about narrowing it down to traditionally proven bladed patterns which are tactically sound and dependable choices.
traditionally, a native blade pattern exists, namely because it was perfected over a period of time by a particular community to best handle the local living conditions and hack types of forested woods/material needed to facilitate basic needs of food 'n shelter or in order words... backwoods survival.
so, depending upon one's location, an individual these days can't go to far wrong with the likes of a simple machete, khurkri or pukko.
so, as the old saying goes 'do as the romans do'; wherever you may be headed or plan to operate in, try buyin' an above average priced local blade pattern.
such patterns have existed for a long time in a particular location simply because collective human experience have shown that these works best.
basic rule is, the less forest you meet, the shorter the blade length, it seems.
well, not unless it's for hunting game or a means of protection from predators (the considerations of tribal warfare is different matter altogather).
one the whole, i believe an SAK would fit in any given condition.
good luck in your quest for the best.
remember, even john rambo had a differnt blade each time he went huntin'.

GIRLYmann said it best, there's a few thousand out there that work very nicely. You need to narrow it down a bit. One of the most important choices on this site is price, do you want to pay $400 for a Busse, $100 for a RAT, or somewhere in the middle and get that Falkniven? What sort of envirnoment are you planning to use it in, Alaska or just keep it in your car for the end of civilization?

15 inch blade or OAL?

If budget is no object I would say Busse Hell Razor or ASH1...

If budget is a factor, then the RAT range or a Grayman or one of Cold Steel's carbon blades like the SRK?

Personally, I always have a little SAK on me, a small FB (Hellion Nemesis on my key-chain), a quality folder, & depending on which car I have, a Busse Meaner street or a Gerber Yari I (I prefer the micarta scales to the Yari II's aluminum handles & 154CM's perfectly fine vs S30V out away from civilization).

However, I definitely have other FBs for various uses. Since you haven't really said what specifically you're looking for, I'm going to assume you want a knife big enough to "fight" with (Hit a vital organ on a human or animal?), able to chop stuff, food prep, etc. I'm also going to assume your knife sharpening skills are none to "eh", based on your comment of being a "newbie." I'm also going to assume you don't want to spend "alot", that probably being under $150, maybe even less than $100.

All that being said, I'd recommend a Ka-Bar or even a Cold Steel in carbon V. I'm not as familiar with all the different models of Ka-Bar (Although I love my SP 08 machete as it's well used), but I'd say anything in the 5"-7" blade length range would work. Cold Steel's SRK or Recon Scout would work. I suggest the above knives (Or ones similar to them) mainly because of their decent quality & use of 1095 steel (Or something similar, which 0170-6C is). Properly heat treated, it'll do whatever you need of it, won't cost a "ton", & will be relatively easy to sharpen. You'll just have to take care of the steel as it can rust if you're not careful.

Another knife that I thought was a decent all around performer, although I don't have it anymore, is the SOG Seal 2000. It's stainless (I think AUS 6, but there might be a AUS 8 model, too), I think it's around 12" OAL or so (7" blade), & seemed to be a good "do everything" knife.

Good luck with whatever you choose, but like a previous poster stated, more specific needs & budget would help narrow it down for you.

What's the knife's application?

I'm not sure while all of you guys are pulling this guys leg.

You want a Mantis. Strider or Busse or Chris Reeve or Emerson or Swamp Rats are wayyy distant seconds.

I appologize on behalf of my fellow forumites.

Just a little gentle ribbing.... ;)

I think its because this question has been asked so many times. Check out a thread called The End all and Be all Thread for more examples of questions that come up all the time.

I don't think the responses suggesting a SAK or MT are a joke. I think they would probably be more handy to a soldier than a big-ass fixed blade.

I began my knife-nut career with just about the same question...

Assuming you mean a survival/utility/combat knife:
- Fallkniven A1
- Ranger RD7 or RAK
- RAT 7 / RC-6
- Becker BK7
- Ka-Bar Fighter - 1095 (Not D2 or 420)
- Gerber LMF II (They don't give this knife enough credit - I love mine)
- SOG Seal knives

If you're seriously considering buying one, make sure you really do your homework... I regret not doing more before I made my introduction here on bladeforums, but I've made up for it.

Also, try to refine your search - figure out exactly what you want this knife to do. Truth is, there's no real answer to your question, 'till you figure out for yourself what you need, what you want, and what does the job.

Good luck!

Just start testing this steel - results are not bad so far.

Thanks, Vassili.
