Best tactical fighting/survival knife

Cactus, let us know what you want to use the knife for... be as specific as you can be. Also let us know what kind of environment you'll be in, and what you want to spend.

What you'll probably find is that unless you intend to start knifing people, any knife you buy will be used for utilitarian purposes approximately 99.99% of the time. Buy a knife that will serve for that, and if necessary press it into duty as a fighter.

Just start testing this steel - results are not bad so far.

Thanks, Vassili.

Thats a good looking knife Vassili.

The Cold Steel small Barong machete would fit the bill for me if I was on a budget. Great for the double duty you mention.

Matador-

At the end of the test SRS15 shows results better then ZDP189 and CPM S30V - so this is for sure best choice. And may be G-Sakai Bosen Enkuto even better then Samurai Bowie because it has thicker and laminated blade.

D2 shows worse performance on my tests and OU31 - good, but SRS-15 way better.

Thanks, Vassili.

It was Benchmade D2 on Limited edition Ares, Dozier D2 actually shows best performance so far.

Thanks, Vassili.

Do you have a picture of the Enkuto next to your Sissipuukko ?

Thanks

Best tactical fighting/survival knife
As a newbie, I wondering what is the BEST tactical knife?????? The largest I would want to consider is 15 inches. All suggestions appreciated.

"Best tactical fighting knife" is not the same as "Best survival knife".

The tasks for each are different.

Victorinox Farmer or similar may well be the best survival knife.
One of Nozh2002's suggestions may be the best fighting knife.

One of the survival task is to chop wood for fire and shelter - camp kind of task. So for this reason knife which you may ends up as an only tool in emergency situation should be able to chop.

Victorinox farmer is not for survival but for comfortable life outdoor. Which is different thing. In survival situation it is hard to imagine need for beer bottle opener.

Thanks, Vassili.

I'm a little late for this thread but I heard a guy say once, "There's not a tree you can't chop down, an animal you can't kill, or a can you can't open with this 'un right here" ... He was holding a Marines K-Bar...

Your question is like asking how long a piece a string is. There are many good combat and tactical knives at all prices, and a good tactical knife is simply one you're comfortable with, is strong and will cut. (My own preference is for a double-bladed design, though in some cases you may want one that will pry.) The Marine Ka-Bars are good; so is the Cold Steel Recon Tanto. I also like the CS Peacekeepers, which are strong and lightweight.

Well.... as mentioned, survival blades and tactical fighters are different breeds of knife.
I personally like the Vic Woodsman over the Farmer for a survival folder, and really like my Kershaw Cyclone for a more tactical folder.

KaBars are a great start for a sort of dual purpose knife, I also like the Blackjack Grunt for a solid beater blade. The Gerber Profile is a really nice blade for the money too. Any one of these will work for you, without killing you wallet.

RAT Cutlery, and Ontario RAT's are both wonderful field knifes, neither will likely let you down, no matter what you are cutting. Ranger Knifes has the RD series. Scott Gossman, of Gossman knives makes some wicked blades. If you want a HUGE knife, look at a KaBar Cutlass, an Ontario RTAK or SP8, or a RANGER RD9, or ........

Anyways, as you can see, there are tons of knives that fit into both catagories.
