Bevel Experimentation. . . .

Epic Fail. . . .

Looks awesome but it is way too deep of a hollow for 3/16th thick . . . . 8" diameter wheel and 1.6 inches high. . . . . . You can literally hold this up to a bright light and it shines through. . . .

Slices cheese like a demon though!!!. . . However, if you try to chop a Buick in half things will most likely go horribly wrong!!!!. . . .

This deep of a dish will however, make for an excellent soup spoon or shovel. . . .

We need to go shallower and bigger. . .

Go big or go home!!!!

Let's drink!!!

I'll take that and I'm not kidding.

That may be a failure to you, but it looks incredible.... Thanks for posting a picture.

Best, Les.

The "science" aspect of using a hollow grind to limit friction and resistance with the medium being cut or chopped is easily undertood .... until you try to deliver it "in real time" ....

I found with large hollow grind blades that cutting with them was fine but chopping with them was not ..... especially with live wood .... or even wet wood .... the blade would bite deep and the wood would swell back into the "hollow dish" making the withdrawal of the knife from the trunk one hell of a hard task ..... no kidding ..... you needed to put your foot on the trunk near the knife to use your leg muscles to remove it .... and I am not short on arm strength either ....

I came across this when doing a comparison knife review when I first got my TTKZ .... the hollow grind knife was a Grand Retribution by Jerry Hossum. It was a stunning knife with great lines and workmanship .... and sharp as any knife I have ever had .... but the actual "use" of the knife was pretty hampered for chopping wood because of this ....

If the wood was totally dry .... or saw mill prepared ..... such as the 2x4 cutting competition stages then maybe the wood would not swell and grip the hollow dish of the knife as much .... but for me using other knives to chop the same wood in that review .... it became pretty clear that a convex or flat grind knife did not have the same problem.

Decided after that test to stick with those grinds for a large knife ....

In a small hunting sized blade hollow grinds work fine though .... no problem there ....

Here are some pic's from that review ....

YES!

A full height hollow grind would be awesome. I love that kind of thing, especially on wide, thick blades.

Imagine if you would, hollowed out convex bevels of equatorial proportions!!!!!

. . . I know. . . . it's crazy right?. . . .

My immediate thought was some of Ban's crazy creations.

So correct me if I am wrong, but you take a full convex grind knife. Nice zero convex edge, then smack the sides with a hollow grind, removing even more steel, and creating even less drag when chopping.

Just saw the pic, and that is exactly what I was thinking about.

I just think that same knife, but don't take the grind so deep.

Oh, and I 'll take it!

The Fällkniven MC1 has that grind (hollow with convex edge). I sold it because it wasn't the chopper i thought it would be. Peter cleared me up on why . Thanks for busting that mystery.

Hey Pete - How's the weather???? Wife and girls just got back from the Narnia premiere in London. Record cold and 5" of snow overnight on Tuesday???? EEEK!

Well I live in the Peak District just at the base of Kinder Scout which is the highest mountain in England ( as opposed to Wales and Scotland ) and to say we have a bit of snow is an understatement .... :D:D The Snake Pass road which goes past my house is shut but amazingly my postman just rang the bell at the front door to deliver the post .... I had to take my nearest neighbour's post too .... LOL when I opened the front door for him there was packed snow half way up the side of the house .... which thankfully did'nt fall into the porch .... and he was up to his waist in it .... but good for him  It's nice to see someone go a bit beyond the call these days .... If I get the chance I will take a few pic's ....

Your wife and kids sure know how to party though .... London to see the Narnia premiere is pretty impressive

It was cool. Jen spent a year in London back 20 yrs ago in college. She got to run thru all the sights.

There's more color there now. Everything isn't brown. Some actual color. (I recall back then every businessman wore a BROWN suit. ICK!) They even color the cabs now. And put out serious Christmas lights and decorations. And you can drink the water! Wish I had gone, but WOW did they get cold and snowed on!

Taken to Busse extremes, but that grind isn't really anything new. Marbles was doing that with their "Ideal" years ago. I mean YEARS ago.

Reportedly, the wide fuller was designed to allow the user to lay the knife flat to the stone for sharpening, without grinding away the body of the blade...
