Vince, to say it the Belgian way, you must add une fois after each sentence! I love the Belgians, they are jolly fellows (and have good beers as well). Brussel is just 2 hours away by train.:)

And don't say "merci" (thanks), say:"s'il vous plait" (please) and with the slow, somehow singing, accent which is often mocked by the Frenchs kidding the belgian with jokes where they look dumb.

I think I shall buy some Chimay for my birthday in two weeks, and post a picture of it with my new Laguiole in this thread, une fois! :)
 
Merçi, Dan. I have not tried all the Belgian beers, but I would probably put Chimay (red lable, but love the blue also) at the top of my list of favorite beers. It's expensive here now, so don't buy too often. Seems like the price is double what it used to be.

I agree, the red Chimay is the one i drink on a daily basis, as i live at less than 10 miles from the Scourmont abbey i get it at a low price. The red is in my opinion the best one, fruity at a not too high voltage (the word used here for the percentage of alcohol).

Now you speak belgian! Or to be more precise wallon (the people of the eastern part of Belgium though at the very east a small minority speak a german dialect). In the west they speak flemish.

The best reply i've heard from a belgian friend is: " We have "French jokes" but we never tell them to the French because we have to repeat again and again and again until they understand".

Vince, some 25 years ago, with ex best half we went to Brussels on the Commando. Chimay was on the way, so we stopped at the brewery's bar for a pinta around 10. 30 am. It was a sunny July, we started with the blue , then had the white and the gold that we could not find in Paris, then decently could not leave without trying the red.
So, it was about 12 am when we decided to leave. First, they did not let us go without eating something more consistent than snacks.
Then, they told us that our beers were paid by a local family (all drinking beer, including the teen agers) clearly not very rich who was sitting a few tables from us.
They never accepted anything in return, they just liked that we rode in Belgium and appreciate the beers. They gave us also a good address for lunch, and even phoned there to be sure we arrived safe and sound. Really nice people there. Those were the days! :)

Talking of Belgian beers, everybody likes the various Chimay but very expensive here (like anything alcoholic...) I lived in Liège for a month or two years ago and my Blonde companion liked trying all Belgian beers ;) she also liked the very commonplace John Martin's Pale Ale which tasted like what I remember Pale Ale being like-before the invasion of citrus flavours..:thumbsdown:

Aber, Oktoberfest jetzt!

I do indeed my friend, I've spent quite a bit of time in Belgium, and have lived in Lille, Roubaix, and Boulogne. I had a 'Blue' the other night, (and a La Chouffe). I actually drank it for years without realising how strong it was! :D :thumbsup:
You know the saying : ça descend comme le petit Jésus en culotte de velours (goes down like little Jesus in corduroy breeches) :D
