Beverages and Blades - Traditional of Course

Day 6: I am a day behind but this next brew is not to be taken lightly. An old favorite, a stout by which many stouts are measured and found wanting, a thick, black meal of an ale that is best not taken on a full stomach. This is Old Rasputin - a Russian Imperial Stout, made by North Coast Brewing Co. out of Fort Bragg, CA.

Für den 7. Dezember haben wir… another Helles lager. Kurpfalzbräu Helles, brewed by Weldebräu. This one started off with a sort of funky aftertaste from the first sip, but when I went back to find it again, it was gone. 5.3% ABV, high carbonation, which I think is good in this style of beer, but overall I’d probably put this one behind the others Helles I’ve had so far from this calendar.

I am going to try and get caught up today - which means not one, but two beers!

Day 7: Raging Rhino, a Red Ale from McKenzie Brewing in Eugene, OR. Red Ales are one of my favorite styles when they are done right. Unfortunately, breweries tend to consider anything from an Amber to a Red IPA as a Red Ale and I staunchly beg to differ. A Red Ale should be the perfect balance of malty and hoppy, have a smooth, rich mouth feel, and a nice crisp finish. This one is pretty good but would be better if the ABV was pushed up higher, I think.

Up next for Day 8 is a style that I have never tried before.

I’m really enjoying reading about all the beers. I love a good beer also, but this time of year my tastes turn to the Manhattan. A nice Manhattan, a White Owl, and the soundtrack to a Charlie Brown Christmas playing in the background, nice start to the evening. 😊👍98406D5E-1C42-4D1D-8551-7DB0F7E6E047.jpeg

For a minute there, I thought you meant a White Owl cigar! .... glad to see it was the knife you were enjoying!

no, I'm not a cigar snob, but.... a white owl? gurp....

Day 8 (proper): This is an interesting beer. It is touted as being a completely new style but rather than summarize, I will just quote the text:

Introducing our third and inventive Bird-Day Volume III, created in collaboration with Pelican alumni Jason Schoneman of Steel Toe Brewing. Pelican partnered up with this Mid-West native to conceive an entirely new beer style to celebrate Pelican’s 25th Birthday! Introducing our Hopwine Style Ale, a triple dry-hopped sparkling ale that delivers the ABV strength of wine, fruity and fun aromatics derived from three different varieties of hops, and low bitterness creating a tactile sensation that may remind you of tannins in wine. This experimental journey between Darron and Jason showcases both their passion and drive to create new and exciting beers for all to enjoy. Cheers to 25 years of beer exploration!

Again, interesting... I am not sure it is quite my cup of tea but I will say it is bright and crisp, very tropical and fruity, infinitely better chilled ( Quiet Quiet ;)), and definitely has a lot of wine character to it. I would say this would make an exceptional summer beer - it would go very nicely with a hot day.

Sounds interesting.

Day 8 of the German Brewer’s Advent Calendar has me drinking this Loncium Biermanufaktur Vienna Style Lager. Sure, it’s another lager, but hey, at least it’s a different style of lager! 🙄😁 I will say, it is distinctly different than the Helles lagers I’ve had so far. More bitterness, more hops flavor. It’s a nice change of pace, and a decent enough beer… but can we talk about that can for a second? There may be uglier beer cans out there, but I certainly can’t think of one off the top of my head. Brown on brown on brown, and you can even read the name of the beer. Felt like I had to pick a colorful knife to offset all the brown. 😉

Off-topic but what's that Flake tobacco? Used to love Flake but not smoked this century, still miss it mind . The CC Lambfoot actually looks like it could slice Plug or Cake tobacco.

That is Orlik Golden Sliced, a predominately Virginia blend with the slightest touch of Perique added in. I find it to be very good, especially if I am not wanting a stronger flavored tobacco.

Day 9: Today, I am blessed with a healthy pour of my favorite Winter Ale. "Sleigh'r" - a seasonal release from Ninkasi Brewing Company out of Eugene, OR. It is a wonderfully roasty dark ale with chocolate warmth on the front and a cool lasting bitterness for the finish. Plus, the heavy metal motif suits me wonderfully 🤘😝🤘.

A different tobacco for today for the curious - Sutliff Bosphorus Cruise - a strong flavored Oriental, Latakia, and Red Virgina blend.

Great name, great can design, sounds like a great beer, too. 😁 I don’t think they distribute as far as Oregon, but you’d probably like Surly’s Todd the Axe Man.🤘

Dylan, your latest blend reminds me of some of the MacBaren's twist tobaccos I enjoyed "back in the day." Royal Twist was my fave!
I gotta try the Sleigh'r.

Day 9 in the Costco German Brewer’s Advent Calendar is Ettl Bräu Teisnacher 1543 Festmärzen. I do enjoy a good Märzen. This one is really malt-forward, a bit on sweet side perhaps, but enjoyable. Nice color and a bit hazy (“Naturtrüb” is German for naturally cloudy), even more so I think than the Weißbier I had a few days back.

Another good German word from this can that I had to look up: Altbewährt. It means “tried and tested.” Gebraut nach altbewährtem Rezept — Brewed according to a tried and tested recipe. Prost! 🍺
