I'm getting......NOT 154CM as I ordered......but instead, BG-42.

That's right.....the website was wrong.

Just got a call from Pete.

I guess this is more material for Dave's reality t.v. show.

This was a message on my machine when I got back from my walk......and here's a quote from Pete, "It's the same steel."

And later in the message he explains again....."the 154CM is not available on the 110, so you'll get the BG-42.....but it's the same steel."

This is definitely more material for Dave's Buck t.v. comedy show.

BG-42, me likey!!! :D

That is very interesting. I was told a BG42 blade would be a $38 upgrade so I ordered S30V. I guess they were really slammed with orders and are still getting things straightened out and getting the custom shop website corrected.

So let me get this straight....154CM is not available except as CPM154 on the Basspro 110's, right?

Looks that way, Pete told me that it was a mess up with the website, never should have been 154CM but BG-42, apologized for the mix up and asked if it was OK to substitute BG-42.

I even managed not to yell YIPPEEE in his ear! :D

Well, it's not available on the custom 110s according to the phone call.

Pete said the 154CM info was erroneously loaded into the 110 side when it should have been in the 193 side.

And also......"Yours will come stamped BG-42, but......it's the same steel."

So why worry?

Gosh, why do we pay any attention to these confusing numbers anyhow?

:D :D :D

The availability of BG-42 is great news.

Thanks for posting!

That is great news indeed! However, I think that I'll let my order for S30V stand. I like S30V and already have 4 Customs in BG-42, so I think that I'll just even out the herd.

The truth is that I always have a heck of a time picking out a steel for the Custom 110 knives. I like all the steels and each one brings to the table certain advantages and disadvantages. I like the corrosion resistance of BG-42, 420HC and S30V; I like the 'toothy' edge that ATS-34 and 154CM give; I like the ease of sharpening and the very fine edge you can get with 420HC and so on.

In the final analysis, I gotta salute Buck for giving us such a great variety of steel to choose from.

I got the impression that he was afraid somebody would complain at getting BG-42, and that's why he kept calling it "the same steel."

Actually, I'm fine with getting BG-42, just not appreciating him saying it was the same steel as 154CM because that's kind of insulting.

As a matter of sales psychology, he'd do better saying "it's actually a better steel and, this one time, we are not charging any extra."

Anyhow, I'm fine with it.......but they better not mess with my damascus order!

Is the next big revelation going to be that there's MOP available?

Nothing would surprise me.

Dave? Are you taking notes?

I got the same call and was quite pleased.Kinda blew the promised shipping date of past monday out of the water, but not a biggie there. They must be working on a few knives there and that's a good thing.

wow...
every one playing nice and no one bitching
Every One Happy?
gee what happen to tar and fethers?
no materal for the show here! must check another string...
chow!

You didn't think it was funny that Pete said BG-42 is the same steel as 154CM?

You don't think, "Yours will be stamped BG-42, but it's the same steel," is a line worthy of a Hollywood writer?

Ok.

To all those who emailed me and thanked me for suggesting that they actually call the Custom Shop and request BG-42...You're welcome... :grumpy:

As the the letters/numerical designation....BG-42, ATS-34, 154CM, etc...those are all trademarked marketing names...They don't reflect any specific alloy content...they're just names...Like Nylon©, Linoleum©, Kool-Ade©, etc...

That particular brand of steel doesn't have to be made by the trademark holder, either...but if it is marketed as such, then a fee (and an agreement) must be made to/with the trademark holder...

And some steels are the same, metallurgically...even though they have different trademark names...but they may be heat treated differently, or rolled differently [hot vs cold], and therefore exhibit different characteristics...

All this has been gone over in the past, here in the Buck forum, and there are some great links to steel mfgs, knife makers, etc... :)
