Bg-42

I agree......mostly because of all the good reports I've seen here in the last couple of years.

Where there's that much smoke.....there must be some fire.

All those numbers don't mean a hell of a lot to me.

Rocinante, Some of those postings of steel element contents contained errors. BG42 is a far better cutlery steel than 154CM, ATS34 and 440C in the edge holding department. Because of its vanadinum content. Don't be concerned, for your recieving an up grade. DM

yes there is some 'error' and it is due to differing sources for the chart.
Some seem to have min and max,
some don’t show some chemicals components at all.
For use it and forget it any place there may be salt or other corrosive environments it is hard to beat s30v and it freshens up sharp very easily..for all other uses were you will be cleaning and caring for the blade after exposure to salt, yes I would agree with BG 42 although it is harder to sharpen once it is dull and it don’t freshen up so easily.
i still use 440c as edc cause it works for me.
in looking around the web seems that bg42 it has a good rep
word i got was Bob Loveless has switched to bg42 and Chris Reeves has switched to bg42 in his Sebenzas but what do i know,,,
i only collect buck 110's but heck i might switch my edc also,
With the availability of diamond stones can any one say Vascowear :D

Dave, To test one of my folders I swam w/ it in my pocket in the Gulf of Mexico for a couple hours. Then left it in the trunks for two days w/o rinsing. The trunks lost most of their color but the blade showed no sign of stain/rust. The knife was of 440C. I ran a similar test on a S60V knife w/ the same results. High Chromium helps. DM

Chickentrax, Your comments are accurate. However, some of the info in these sites is not. DM

Yup; as 334dave pointed out, some companies (and some sites) have different ideas of what constitutes a particular blade steel (or any steel).

..."Ya pays yer money, and ya takes yer chances"... :D

can any one find Vascowear ?
heard it is devil:mad: to sharpen but last forever...:p

...That stuff was a popular knife steel with custom makers and apparently some production companies years ago but it was so hard to work with it lost favor. It held a terrific edge jus' like 440C did though and was tough as hell...We had some for use in our tool and die department, years ago, for special tooling. It wasn't "stainless" at all however IIRC...

...HA HA HA...Yer right about that "crew" stuff too Dave...We has some bars of "Cru-Ware" that was also used for special projects. It was used for tiny punches and matched up with carbide dies if my memory isn't going further south...:p
