BHQ Excl. Lum Tanto?

I used to think of Sal as being the antithesis of Thomas from ZT, But after reading this thread...:(

Sal's original sin vis-a-vis that unlike-Sal rant post was him emoting too much pride which in and of itself is one of the deadly 7 ;)

That said, the Man just made a blanket apology statement a few posts above this and suggested an easy course of action. I would refrain from piling on because too much repetitious negativity just cultivates copious amounts of misery and that would cloud the judgement. For the sake of clarity, if you have received an almost perfect unit then count yourselves very fortunate because this is a beautiful knife. If you are in my bracket who has received something that is not perfect yet far from imperfect (let's remain objective here) but can be improved upon by a few very simple tweaks here and there AND if you have purchased at the dealer's original list price, then it's worth considering to keep it. Lastly if you got yourself an absolutely horrible sample with an abundance of mechanical defects, then return it and let BHQ / Spyderco / Factory sort it out without having your $219.95 worth of skin in the game.

To hell with your bitching and warped blade "How many dealers do you know of that have the balls to commission such a project?" you tell them lol

If everyone understands that the best types of guests are the sort who attempts to leave the place where they were welcome at a bit neater, tidier and cleaner than the when they stepped in, the place will always look, feel and smell sparkling clean. In your case, I thank you for limiting your posts to about 15 per year

Hi Majen, Perhaps you didn't see this post (above) or you just won't accept my apology? thanx for sharing your feelings.

To all;

My apologies for letting off some steam. You did not deserve that. If you have problems with the knife and your not happy, please return it to BHQ and ask them to return the knives to Spyderco. We'll decide what to do with them. I will also discus the quality issues with my management staff and the maker. Maybe we can chill a bit?

I was so excited about this one. When I opened the box I was extremely disapointed. The blade was rubbing on the liner and it makes the scraping sound like the other forum members youtube video. It also has some side to side bladeplay. The design of the knife is beautiful though. So I hope we get another Lum Tanto made at another factory.

This is going back to BHQ pronto. It is safe to say I will not be buying anymore Japanese Spydercos.

My BHQ DLC Manix and CF CuWear Manix however are both perfect.

Funny story just to demonstrate what harms some hubris can cause:

Ever since I managed to dial in my "wonky" (sorry Sal, just had to go there as I could'nt resist it :D)Lum-Tanto to my liking in order to keep it no fuss-no muss, I then took it upon me to d*ck around with my almost, almost perfect KW's CF/Ti S90V Millie to make that one also a bit more smooth like we always strive for in our demented and obsessive ways. Can you all guess as to what happened? Yup, I no longer have a centered blade like I had before tinkering with it and the next move will be me taking it apart to service it to bring back to its state of nirvana (not that Nirvana! double zing!).

Luckily for me, I had already decided to keep my BHQ-Lum-Tanto in addition to snagging another backup CF/Ti 90V from KW when it went on sale last week sub 200$. Moral of the story, in our hobby an almost perfect specimen can be turned into an ugly betty the same way that an ugly looking duckling can turn into a beautiful swan. I'm just saying ;)

True enough. I used to spend a lot of time tuning the disc brakes and derailleurs on my mtn bike if I tried for "perfect", usually ended up maybe slightly better than I started after messing it up from workable to out of alignment. I used to do speed workouts to become a faster runner, would get injured and when I recovered I was happy to get back to where I had been ;)
Been through fixing folders to get them back to where they had been before trying to improve on pretty good.
As far as the Lum tanto goes, some of the pictures and QC concerns are alarming, especially for folks like me who have waited a long time for this to come to pass, and anybody with a problem one should do whatever they feel is the correct decision for them. But for me, I hope I can take delivery of my Lum tanto tomorrow (weather permitting), and I hope it is a good one, but if it is not it will be going to spyderco for a tune-up, not back to BHQ. No judgement from me on what anyone else decides, or how they feel about this whole conversation, but I still want one (a functional one).
One thing I am confident of, is that Sal and spyderco really do try their best to deliver what the customer wants and expects. Between that, the generally very high quality, the range of designs and steels, there really is not a comparable knife company out there.

I'm cooled of and "chill". Not that I was hot to begin with.
After numerous perfect spydercos over the years, Ive come to expect perfection, because they've always delivered.
This Lum is a miss for me, and have only one last thing to add.
Maybe through the wizardry of heat treat some blades did not warp at all, some a little, and some more than a little.
This could account for the great, good, and (mine) bad centering.
Anyways, thanks Sal, BHQ, and the hundreds of Seki and Spyderco employees. They are without a doubt listening and trying their darndest to give their loyal customers what they want:thumbsup:

I am hoping we can all put this lum folder behind very soon. To let that happen, bladeHQ - could you please release the DLC M4 jade g10 PM2 asap? I bet there will be much less issues if any with it.

Has the pendulum swung the other way in making these more collectible? It’s probably extremely unlikely there will be another HAP40 or Lum Tanto sprint.

I was initially slightly disappointed, but it’s still a keeper for me. My blade is centered and no real issues, just the overall quality doesn’t seem up to par with Golden or Taichung products. I don’t have a Lum Tanto or anything in HAP40 so it’s staying.

Hopefully all this negativity doesn’t put off Sal or BladeHQ.

I’m still a loyal Spyderco customer.

I have one with off center blade and hard opening. Will I keep it, heck yes!

Since this is a BHQ exclusive would the factory have extra blades? They might offer us a credit for another knife, but as Sal said early in this tread, if you have a bad knife send it back to the dealer and instruct them to send it to the factory.

Martin, if it is not that bad like it is not rubbing against the lockbar side's liner making gritty sounds, it can be improved upon and definitely worth keeping. Look at my post regarding mucking up my CF/Ti Millie :D I'm obviously not that much of a craftsman and even my inept arse managed to smooth some my Lum-Tanto's little bugs. Good luck my friend :)

Mat, I did see how you improved your Lum and then fussed with your military, some work out wonderfully and others not so much? But sometimes we are just stubborn and just can't help ourselves. Oh well life happens, thank you Sir? Best wishes

Seriously? I've bought several Taichung made Spydercos at half that price..the Sage series among others and every one of them were basically perfect except for one, a K2 that came with the centering off and I fixed it back to dead center with a slight tweak to the pivot pin..took all of three seconds to fix.

Just like people are allowed to come here and heap praise..like you did for the two you "love"..they are also allowed to come here and air their grievances.

You were the one got that k2 for $119 out from under me? Lol, nice to finally hear from the guy got the best deal on a knife ever, possibly! I don’t remember if that was the price, it might’ve been a bit more, and of course there were several across several sites so I’m of course joking here. I still don’t own a Taichung made spydie, all Seki’s and Golden’s. Knife people are a proud people, and I was a little shocked at first, how sometimes a poster could take such offense at a comment that had no real intent or direction, but was taken as such. I’m still sometimes offended myself, shockingly, without any reason at posts making fun of me when I know life is too short to try and deny anyone some fun, as long as my professional reputation is not at stake. However, with this last is in fact in play, everything gets serious real fast and doors get locked quick. This post was deliberately made as a long single paragraph to discourage skimmers from reading this far, and has no real intent except to make an observation. I wish I had preordered this one, makes me think ahead about the v-toku2 models, and the super blue calypso jr., which if I miss I will consider ending it all(my knife hobby, that is!)

Don’t worry about that one, it will come right back to where it was before you opened it. Same has happened to me on every ti Millie I’ve tried to make 1% “better.”
