You didn’t miss much.I missed the boat on this....![]()
I’m also curious how BHQ resolved blueboost’s problem knife - other than refund his money and he keeps the knife.
BladeHQ gave me a $50 refund.
. . .
Am I satisfied? I don't know. I guess more than returning it and getting a refund and no C46 at all.
Not a steal, but good for collectors who want a.... nice? Lum Tanto.Meh… 290 without a box isn’t exactly a steal.
Well if it’s still there, you have your answer. Not a steal, but good for collectors who want a.... nice? Lum Tanto.
You know Spyderco freaks (myself included) have their eyes drawn to this rare thing for 'em to do. I just wonder would anyone use that appleseed tip to full potential.

“eBay” isn’t a market cost estimator. I can find lots of knives that closed in eBay at ridiculous prices. Doesn’t mean someone would be successful selling on here at that cost.Considering that one like it just sold for $450 on EB, $290 is/was quite reasonable. Actually anything under $300 for an "original" Lum Tanto folder in G10 or Ti is really a bargain in the "current" market.
The price isn’t in line with other comparable products from Spyderco, that’s why the sticker shock. We aren’t demanding CRKT prices here. I think this knife being plagued by poor quality control is a bit apples v oranges to a Wayne Gretzky rookie card. We can all be Spyderco fans, while not throwing money at every new knife that comes out. Price has a significant impact on demand... regardless of whether a huge profit is made or they’re barely covering their costs to produce it.The problem with these kinds of discussions is that it's easy to fall into the trap of believing that the price of something is, or should be, its cost of production plus some "fair" markup. Not only is this false, but we would never want it to be true, because we would all be far poorer. Prices are a reflection of demand, not material worth. Material worth can of course influence demand, but so can many other factors. What is the material worth of a 1979 OPeeChee Wayne Gretzky rookie card? One dollar maybe? But one of these sold last year for close to 4 million dollars.
That's literally what it is in the case of Spyderco however. They price it on a standard markup over cost. It's not based on expected or real demand. The problem with these kinds of discussions is that it's easy to fall into the trap of believing that the price of something is, or should be, its cost of production plus some "fair" markup.
We are talking about two different things. You are talking about an artificial price, the sticker price. I am speaking about the actual market price. The latter is based upon way, way more real world information than the former. When some Spyderco sprint run drops and sells out within an hour, it is because that artificial price was set below the actual market price. Knife flippers take advantage of this. Those who gripe so much about knife flippers should be petitioning Spyderco to raise their prices to better align with the true demand for their sprintsThat's literally what it is in the case of Spyderco however. They price it on a standard markup over cost. It's not based on expected or real demand.
I wonder if you have a bent liner? Anyways, my sample has a few nitpicks issues, mainly the lanyard tube is higher on the non-clip side. Not a huge deal, but it's edges are a bit sharp, and drag on the palm of your hand in an annoying fashion...Phos bronze washers didn't help. Made it worse.
The blade is off center but I'm glad to just make it a user. I'd also buy every single iteration of this knife that got made in the future, like I have the ones prior.
I really like this color way. It's not perfect. This is one for the fans and I'm willing to accept my "problem child" for a $50 discount. I can actually use the knife. My only other Lum C46 is a numbered ti pe and I can't touch it. I foolishly sold my G10 PE many years back. Lessons we learn...
If the tip snaps on this model and the other re-runs, it does offer the ability to grind the tip in the fashion of the original C46, so it's not really a big deal. These are hard use folders and I'm glad to have been put in a position where I have a C46 I can use again.
If anyone is interested I can show how to make the action on this knife much more useable. I'm a watchmaker by trade which trickles down to some easy basic gun and knife smithing. Essentially the TiNi coating on the blade and liners drags really hard. Causing loose fitment for better action.
