BHQ Lum Tanto

Seriously guys, did BladeHQ BladeHQ punk me with an AliExpress version? My kids crayon penmanship is better than this Hallmark. Is this my "special child" or are all of these coming out of the womb with the various "blessings" mine has? I am really taken aback. SP YDERCO

First of all, I’d return the knife. Second, if I really wanted a good one I’d take a look at that company that sells “custom” knives on consignment (but not Arizona iced tea😉), and add a good chunk to the bladehq tag and get what I really wanted. I have a feeling that the black sprint and the original Lum tanto are going to increase just from limited availability. If I wanted one bad enough to settle for an ugly coated black ill-ground blade I’d sure as heck add some $$$ to make me happy though perhaps a little lighter in the wallet. Maybe the exchange will grant your wish. But that’s me. Good hunting gentlemen!! I wonder why Sal hasn’t weighed in with his take on this?

I'm good with my original. I'm going to keep this and tinker with it, make it a user. BladeHQ BladeHQ took care of my issue with this one. Anytime I've had an issue they have been great.

IDK. Sold out is sold out and selling over 700 knives in a wk is over 100/day. That still sounds like a lot of demand to me.

I'm sure BHQ is happy with that and it really doesn't matter that it took a wk rather than a day to do it.

It's not like they were sitting on them for months or years which has been the case for some of Spyderco's offerings.
Selling out in 60 seconds is not the same as taking a week. The demand wasn’t there for this, and we can assume a lot of it has to do with cost. Many exclusives from BHQ utilize the same materials (special steel and different color G10) and sell for $150-$200. Why was this one almost $300? You may be generalizing to protect BHQ and Spyderco from ridicule, but it isn’t working. Now after seeing the pictures of the quality, I can say with certainty this was NOT a $290 knife. This should have been $190.

If I had gotten the knife blueboost did, I'd still be angry even at $190.

Yeah and how is that supposed to be fixed without risking it again? You don’t.. you get your money back and move on with life. I bought the Ayoob and didn’t even think THAT felt worth the cost.

Think of all the $$$ to be made if they would set up another line that did nothing but Paysans? Been waiting for that for years. But I digress.

I agree. If one had seen the photo of the knife with its poor F&F, non-Lum style tip grind, and irregularity with lettering, would one possibly say “Yeah it’s sorta crappy, but I can live with paying $190 for it; seems too good to pass up!” Maybe so.

I’m also curious how BHQ resolved blueboost’s problem knife - other than refund his money and he keeps the knife.

Spyderco fans love their knives and I totally get why. I have almost a dozen I wouldn’t part with. But for $300 I’d opt for a used pj sebenza/inkosi with a tanto blade, then maybe get it a spa treatment. It wouldn’t have the allure of a Lum Tanto, but neither does this release by BHQ.

I’m not being an apologist, at all, but here’s a few observations (someone will surely correct inaccuracies).

The Jade BHQ Lum was in 2018 at $220 (I think). The current rendition is priced about 30% higher. Take into acxount 4 years of inflation and whatever the exchange rate has done…how should it have been priced? (asking in a rhetorical sense).

Back to 2018, there were lots of posts and lots of pictures about the jade Lums with QC issues. I’ve seen much fewer on this run (here on Bladeforums anyway).

As for my opinion? At $300 and a special edition, each and every specimen should have a strenuously high level of QC. The knife posted by blueboost blueboost is egregious, as were a few of the pics from 2018. I’m glad blueboost feels he was taken care of by BHQ

At some point (probably soon) they're going to rethink these re-issues of long discontinued knives from the Japan factories if this continues.

Commodity inflation comes and goes.. metals have come down from the highs of peak-COVID. Shipping containers are down, etc. Labor still an issue. 2018 vs. 2020-2021? Maybe.. but inflation isn’t a straight pass-through… and raw materials are just a percentage of the finished good cost. If the raw materials were 30% higher, and raw materials were 40% of the cost, you can see what I’m getting at. $290 vs. $220 isn’t an inflation only cost. Something else sprinkled in that I’d assume.

Were all Lum tantos ( including this current version) made with Teflon washers? What was the reason for not using PB washers?
