Bicycles!

Not just back.

I just saw a vid posted elsewhere of a bad MTB crash (looked like Frenchmen somewhere in Africa?).

Somehow (handlebar? Brake/shift levers?), the rider's femoral artery was hit. Took some fast action by the rider and riding buddies to prevent him bleeding out right there, while waiting for medical personnel.

The more years/experience you accrue, the more acutely aware of your mortality you become. Injuries don't heal as quickly either.
You are referring to Cedric Gracia's crash. Yeah, he almost bled out for sure. His buddy was using his whole body weight over his knee to compress his femoral at his pelvis. His motto is "No fucks given". One of my favorite riders to watch.

Cedric is so smooth on his bike. I'm glad he didn't die, but he sure messed himself up

A surprising number of people have hurt themselves really badly by jamming the bars into their leg or body. It's not a cure but close end grips prevent cookie cutter samples.

I was in a wreck this season and the bar end jammed into my inner thigh.
Got up, dusted off, reset the bars and was back on the trail.
About a half hour later I felt something jiggling around on my leg.
Hematoma the size of a frickin grapefruit where I got jammed with my Rogue grip!
Gross lookin thing.
Made the trip to the ER and got it taken care of.
If there was a laceration involved I would have been in trouble.
So yes, keep those bar ends covered.

We started DVR recording the show called Global Wheeling on the Outside channel. Cool show about 1 man riding the globe twice now since 2005 and his effort to cutdown on his carbon footprint by traveling the world on a bicycle instead of petrol burning vehicle.
Then also Lohan is now in Bolivia also traveling thru the Americas on his fat bike, very cool videos as well.
Instead if watching the circus in Washinton DC I enjoy watching these guys living their dreams on bikes- ;)

My 63 year old riding buddy is all set to ride the Baja Divide on his Trek 1120. He starts January 1st and hopes to do about 1200 of the 1600 miles, I think he is going for 6 weeks. Bike adventures are the best !!

That is badass! I lived in Baja and ventured out alot by dirt bike: the Sierra de la Laguna and Sierra de la Gigantica are amazing “islands in the sky”, beautiful remote biospheres, & a must see if possible. There are many high caves with rupestrian paintings from ancient cultures, and ancient stone townsites and dwellings up in the Sierra de la San Francisco. That will be an epic adventure on bike! Good luck too him!
