Big blade haters

Ok, i am far from the most educated person on here, but i am gonna go out on a limb here & make a statement, :foot: i believe that most people who do not like to carry a large blade, say that because they do not have a properly designed sheath. Now, having said that, I AM NOT BASHING THE FACTORY SHEATH !!! I realize that the genius behind the decision to provide an "adequate" sheath (and only just that in some cases-adequate), is to keep the cost of the two together, as low as possible, making a GREAT product, available to many who would not even consider buying one, if $100 was added to the price (for a custom kydex rig). I was laughed at last deer season, for wearing my BK9/Gerber Metolius custom kydex rig. Until they saw it in action. Even then i heard "i would NOT want to carry that all day." So a week later, i gave it to the guy who protested the most. He wore it for the day. At the end of the day, i had to ASK HIM for my knives back & he said he forgot he was even wearing them. That says a lot to me. If it is not slapping you on the leg, poking you in your side, getting stuck & caught on stuff when entering or exiting a vehicle/atv/horse, then you forget all about it---until you have a need for it. I'm just sayin'. :D Anyone else agree ?

Well... I think it's funny that many of the folks who are into backpacking will carry all sorts of gear with them, much of it they won't even use on that outing, but will say they want only a small knife to cut down on unnecessary weight

If you're carrying 15 lbs of gear in that backpack, you want to save ounces of weight with a smaller knife? IMO a good knife is at the TOP of my priorities for outdoors woodsy stuff.

I'm with twin on the sheath issue. Although, I recently bought a 5 and am pleased with the new sheath. It still rattles, but I might introduce it to mr. heat gun during the week. Did that this weekend (heat up liner and mold to the knife) to an ontario RAK and I'm keeping it. Same goes for the 5. Another vote for big Beckers! More sheaths:

I am a huge fan of Big bladed knives, most of my blades are large. I believe that if the knife is riding properly in a sheath designed for it, you will not know it's there, comfort is king here especially if it is on your hip or carried baldric style. I carry my large blades in both styles and never have an issue.

I think a large knife and a small knife both have their places.

For EDC it would make much more sense to carry a folder or smaller fixed blade then a BK9.
When your out in the woods, A larger fixed blade is more durable and much easier to use then your EDC Folders.

right tool for right job. most everything i need to do i can do with 3" blade. if i was going to go out and start chopping things, i would carry hatchet or saw. i don't hate big blade. they are just not comfortable to carry for day to day tasks.

See post # 40---I'm just sayin'. LOL :D

A simple mod to the stock sheaths is all that is needed to make them 1000% more comfortable. :

Make a D-ring out of some sturdy metal rod to fit said sheath. Install on said sheath.
Buy a pkg of Police nylon "belt keepers" w 2 snaps on each one.
Attatch belt keeper to newly installed D-ring.
Get some shock cord & make a leg tie.

You now have a "drop-leg set-up" that will be 1000% more comfortable. Still not as good as a custom kydex or leather set-up, but for someone on a budget, it is a HUGE improvement. BONUS : you can put your small SAK or LeatherMan type tool in the extra pocket on the stock sheath. BONUS/BONUS : you can also carry a BK13 in a BK9 sheath---plus the SAK or LeatherMan type tool. So EVERYONE is happy !!

But, some haters are still gonna hate ! LOL :D

Me, i LOVE big blades, small blades & in-between blades.

Try doing some backpacking. Camping or hunting for the day is no big deal you can carry whatever, When you put on a couple hundred miles you will quickly reevaluate the weight of what you carry.

lol. it's a nite ize pouch for cell phones, my aunt found some of them at her work and gave them to me. Turns out an altoid can fits perfectly there, but I guess u can drop a camera there too :D

Honestly in the mountain lion situation, I'd rather have a smaller blade, I'm going to most likely blind swinging the blade, and with a smaller blade there is less likelihood of me stabbing myself in the back or decapitating myself.
I'm with you. For fighting I prefer a 4-5 inch blade, more control and faster.
For woodsbumming I have a 7 on my belt and an 8 inch Old Hickory butcher's knife in my pack as a machete. That's about as much length I'm comfortable with for a true knife. For a machete thickness blade I can deal with up to about 12 inches without being too uncomfortable with the tool. YMMV.
And for EDC- A Case Peanut still handles most of my tasks. That is a quite small blade.

Machete's, Khukri's, and Bowies are all big blades and I'm fond of all of them. My BK9 has been used to cut/chop wood, debark a tree, cut up meat and veggies and take down thistles in the yard. Talk about a versatile blade. :) My Khukri's and Machete's have done the same. Right now I lean more towards knives with 12"+ blades along with a medium (4-7") and a small knife.

Sure I could survive with a small knife, but I would Thrive with a Larger one. There are people who seem to live for the challenge of using a small blade for large blade tasks but thats not for me. I'll take a small and a large blade any day. :)

In all honesty a 15" blade might be a little much, well idk! I do like the KA-BAR grass machete

It would be great for me. The one in my avatar is 14.25" long with a .28 spine. The bigger the better. A 15" BK9 would probably jump ahead of a few knives on my to-get list.

Exactly. If I'm backpacking I'm not going to take a blade that weighs almost a pound or more when a < 4oz blade will do everything I need to do.

Favorite knife of all time for me is the Busse NMFBM, yea I like BIG!!!!! A big knife is very handy in the Wild Places.

When I met my city girl wife she was freaked out the first time I took her out in the woods and I had a machete. When I used it to clear a path through some multiflora rose, then she understood.

Why you unabashed romantic, you! You take a city girl for a hike through multiflora on your first date -- and she marries you anyway?

That girl needs some serious professional help... :D

22 years later now and she has her own HI khukri (15.5" Chitlangi) and she wants a BK-16. And I have to hide my .44mag ammo because that stuff is expensive and she won't stop shooting it if she has easy access to it.
