Big blade haters

The only reason I don't edc my bk9 is because people would look at me like I'm freaking crazy, I have a Chestnut Ridge kydex sheath for it and when its on my hip I hardly notice it! But don't get me wrong I love all my Beckers, he'll I don't go anywhere without my bk14!

I know exactly what a 9 can't do that a machete will easily do when splitting wood: crescent the blade!!

:D

One more vote for the big'uns. :)

One of the best things about civilization collapsing: you can EDC anything you want.

Haters be Hatin'

I'm not a big blade hater at all. I LOVE large knives. I just think mission drives the gear. In some end times "Book of Eli" scenario a BK9 might be a great EDC, but I see it as a camping/bushcraft/dayhike blade. A folder, or a fixed blade that maxes out around 4" makes more sense to me for normal 'round town EDC. The smaller knife will handle all possible cutting needs, while concealing nicely and not adding more weight to a belt that's already carrying a pistol and an extra mag. This is why (in addition to a Becker addiction) I bought a BK16 and 17. Once I get the proper sheath I think one of those two knives will be very close to the ideal EDC fixed blade, being neither too large or too small. Time will tell. I might discover I'm way off base, but I kinda don't think so.

To the OP

I'm with Fatty & Saturatedshadow. Long & short fixed blades cover it all in the woods. I have a 10" chopper & it's invaluable for anything big or small if need be. I carry a 4" IWB for smaller needs.

I don't get into the woods like I used to but that's my opinion. Ignore those "Rambo" jerks, you got the job done when the chips were down. :)

I'm sort of a medium blade kinda guy, preferring the 3.5" to 5" fixed blade category. My BK2 is my EDC and goes with me almost everywhere (not always on my hip, but always in my truck or easily accessible) backed up by a Spyderco folder clipped in my pocket. Prefer fixed blades for sure, but of course a folder does have it's place in life.

I agree with you Arizona, if I'm not carrying my BK14 I moste certainly have a folder of some kind, usually my Cold Steel Raja III but only because Mr. Becker hasn't made a folder yet! I like small and medium blades but I LOVE my big blades!

IMO, it's not that most people hate big blades.........they just aren't comfortable using them, nor do they have an appreciation or understanding of them. Granted, there is a weight/size and space requirement for most people, which could lead to their dislike of larger blades. These people are usually the ones who dont camp far from civilization as well.....so they don"t have to depend on a blade for more than a conversation piece or light work.

I live on a farm, so processing animals is common for me. I have one knife for all processing, a Buck Special (6" blade). How you cut up a pig is you split in half, right down the center. You put your knife on its spine and cut the whole way down. I have on several occasions sunk my whole blade into a pig and needed to cut deeper. So 6" is good, but I prefer 8".

That is a pretty bold statement.

I carry a smaller blade in the 3-4" range on pretty much every backpacking trip, just earlier this year I was backpacking in the Bob Marshall Complex and the Clearwater N.F, and only carried my ESEE-3 and not one time did I wish a had a larger blade with me, a 3-4" fixed blade is more than capable in the woods.

Don't be confused, I like large knives, I acutally just bought a BK-7 ( :) ), I just find for MY uses in the woods, a smaller blade is more than enough.

I dont think there are haters ( actually I think there are...), but most people who bring up big blades just dont understand why you need them. A kid I knew didn't know what I carried a 5 inch, he came to work with my for a few days and now he knows why. its just a matter of what you need and what is too much.

I need a big knife so I can do this in less then a minute. Well...I guess I don't need to but I like to. It's fun.

Where is Moosez and Bladite and Gunyon? I want to see their opinion on this subject. Get some authority involved you know! It's obvious that determining what blade size to use depends on what task you are doing. But what this thread is about is people being uneducated on proper usage of a large blade and or not having an open mind! You know the sort...
