As I came home the other day my mother totally freaks out. She works for the police in the village I live in and she starts ranting something about "illegal weapons". I'm like totally  . Turns out she just saw a nice picture sheet and some really nice security cam footage of me at the Gembloux, Belgium knifeshow bying myself a nice hunting knife. Now hunting knifes are free to own and have etc... according to the law here. That's not all she also had a list of my last folder purchases! Seems the police considers me one of the more dangerous individuals buying my legal knives at legal shows and stores. Don't they have some pedophiles to arrest or other serious criminals! Geez...

I have no clue at all! When I ask my mom about it she goes totally crazy but I've seen copies of the pics in my file and there's no way on earth she could know the details she told me 'bout the show. It's just freaky...

No sh*t man, I spend my tax money on this crap ? Geez they let our most wanted criminal nearly get away but they feel like I'm the best investment of their time ??

I cant speak for knife shows, but it is common practice here for police to video gun shows. I believe the reason is to see if any local gang mebers are buying and what they are buying.

In the meantime, who's keeping an eye on the criminals? Knife collectors have been getting a lot of bad Press lately.

What a shame! A lot of misconception about sharpened objects, especially knives has been spread around. Sadly, the public in general have come to believe that all knives are bad, so naturally those who buy or collect them are also undesirables.

Will the knifemakers associations or guilds please release a statement to straighten these guys out.

Thing is I'm not a gang member nor did I have any trouble with the law! Unless it's a crime to spend 300 euro on a hunting knife

but....................didnt you already know all of this?????

actually, it isnt funny and that seems to me a very large abuse of police authority. I would walk down there and confront them and ask them what they are up to (unless you have other issues with them that need to be avoided)

I'll put my flame retardant underwear on. :D

Obviously I am very pro knife and pro gun. I believe strongly in the right to keep and bear arms. I know we are talking about Belgium here, but the right to keep and bear arms comes from a greater power than any government.

That being said. I don't see how this is an abuse of police power. How can it be an abuse to take pictures in a public place. I would argue that there is no expectation of privacy at a knife show or any public place for that matter. Now, taking pictures of you in your home would obviously be an abuse.

Its just all a part of the grand global plan.I know all about it but if I where to tell you anything I or one of the, well I can't say who, would have to kill you.
Really, that sucks!Never know who has what on you.Might have to come down to a global civil war.;)Lets raise the army now.I will be in contact.

Oh boy I bet there is a goverment computer keeping a eye on this forum and all its radical members that has all its bells and whisles going off right now.
Ok thats enough I got to go see who that is at the door.

Hey goverment guys, this reply really is just a joke.No need for a visit.

Whether or not it's an abuse of power depends on the reason why the police were monitoring the knife show. If they had reason to believe that criminal activity might be involved, then I'd say they proceeded correctly. Otherwise, I would have to question the police's priorities and their motives.

Edited to add: Though I don't know anything about Belgian law, I would imagine that even there a legitimate expectation of privacy is subject to time and place. If the knife show was held on private property, I don't see how the police could have gotten a copy of the tape without a warrant.

If the private property is open to the public there is no expectation of privacy.

As far as needing a warrant, it wouldn't be necessary if the owner of the security tape gave it to them. It would be interesting to find out though.

*disclaimer: I don't know about the procedure in Belgium.

While he's joking, there's probably more truth to U812's post than we'd all like to admit. The New World Order prefers a passive populace with no teeth.

WillyD,

What's really a shame here is how your mom is reacting. I mean, if your not breaking any laws (which you are not) then she should not be concerned. In fact, she should be more upset with her employer (police department) than with you.

Consider this a badge of honor.

I went to a biker funeral once and saw unmarked cars snapping pictures. Turns out they were FBI agents.

I had nothing to be afraid of, so I went to the edge of the tarmac, stood on my tiptoes, gave them a big grin and waved like a fool. They laughed and snapped my picture.

Twenty years later I lifted weights with an FBI agent and told him the story.

He tells me it makes my 'file' look ridiculous.

It's just a shame that people who are just taking pleasure in their hobby are being considered as "possible criminals". Would this happen if I was at a kitchen-utensils show? For a lot less money I could pick up some equally dangerous chef's knives there. It was just a gathering of knife-makers and knife enthusiasts with a very friendly athmosphere and I think the kind of people that were there had no intention to use their knife in a criminal way. You don't spend a couple of 100's on a knife you are going to use in a crime and will have to throw away. Like most of you say, they don't kow about the knife comunity so they see it as evil and need to watch it. I wasn't expecting any privacy and I certainly expected security cams but that the footage would be shared with the polic

So there is no expectation of privacy beyond the confines of my walls. If my lawyer accepts a walk-in client just once then...? If I use the restroom at a reststop on the interstate...? If I dock my sailboat in a harbor then you can just board and tax my tea...? Break into my shop at the public mall...? Imiaging technology on the street...? Search me other ways at will...? Listen to me having sex in my bed room as long as your not physically on my property in the interest of terrorism...? Special rules for special times but not for special people...? Luckily there is a little sense left on the Supreme Court. Probably not for long...Care to peer into my body cavity...?
