Big Leaf blade

OMFG why now?? When I'm trying to buy a house? That's an heirloom!! Any time but now. Groan.

I really love these leaf blades but the practical side of me has a question. How do you sharpen a blade style like this...a normal bench stone wouldnt work unless there is a technique I am missing??

Beautiful, absolutely beautiful. Someday I have to come up with money for one of
your leaf blades. You do them so well.

Bench stone will work, although narrower stones can be better for getting inside curves. Sandpaper on a rubber sanding pad can work very well too as it will deform a little bit and follow curves fairly well, especially if you're going convex. You're unlikely to have to sharpen the entire blade at any given time--something like this, if used, is seldom going to be used for skinning or breaking down cardboard, but rather for impact cutting (chopping/cleaving) so the edge damage will more likely be little areas of deformation in rolling or blunting rather than dulling through abrasion. Belt sanders work well (especially when wearing leather belts loaded with polishing compound) as does any kind of stropping setup.

Basically, it's just a learning process. You can sharpen recurves and hawkbill blades with a flat, rectangular stone---but you likely won't start out being able to.

Phillip,

Beautiful work! Have been looking at a long knife, but my first sword has to be a Katana. If you are on the fence you better pull the trigger quickly, this one should go fast...

Hey, I've seen a blade similar to that somewhere.... :D

Great piece! Hope I can get mine to turn out half as good!

I'm amazed and gratified at how much you all like this piece. I wish I had four or five of them to sell! :D The guy who ordered this one got in touch with me today (must have seen this thread) and said he still wants it. In fact he thought he had paid for it, and my emails to him weren't getting through, so it was just a big miscommunication. I'm sorry I have to take it down, and I hope no one is mad at me. :o

I guess I'll have to make more leaf blades. :D

I'm a leaf-blade freak! I've seen Ted's sword and it's arguably the most beautiful leaf-blade I've ever seen. AFAIC, you can't make enough leaf blades, Phillip. You are a true master of the craft!!!

Well, the original owner still has not paid up, and he's not answering his emails again, so, first come first serve, this is back up for sale. :)
I can't send emails, so please PM me if you're interested.

geeze, someone buy this thing. It's killing me just sitting there. It's like it's waiting for me or something.
