hello,

my name is swissbianco and i had an idea about making an big folder with the spyderco features like spyderhole and compression lock.

at the iwa sal and eric glesser gladly find time to discuss it out with me and we havent the same feelings if sutch an big folder would sell.

we talking here about an 5mm thick 110mm long blade with the typical round hole, an thick but ergonomic g10 handle 142mm long with an 2.5mm thick compression lock, 4 position clip and some other features. it will be an verry strong folder, with pouch and clip for easyer carry options.

as the material and workmanship is important for me as an swiss, the price will be in the "upper level".

would you consider buy sompthing like that or better make an smaller version out of the same design?

many thanks for your suggestions!

thanks, cpm d2 or sompthing else suitable from crucible. important is the quality and at least the first will be all black coated. work on some details.

sure the market will be smaller than for an small or medium folder but should be still worth it.

Sounds intriguing. A blade that nears .2 inches definitely interests me, particularly with such a stout compression lock, but 110mm is a tad long for my own selfish purposes. They can make yours then make a "mini" (in name only) version for me. :)

Sounds good to me. I've been searching the Spyderco site looking for a knife just like the one that you described. It sounds like a slightly bigger version of the military but with a compression lock. I like the idea. I'll say more later, gtg.

I prefer uncoated blades but that's just me, I have this illogical paranoia of the black coating affecting food.

If you are in the design stage, a large diameter pivot (for strength from increased shear capacity), a thicker liner (very good especially for the uncommon loads like prying) and pay special attention to the torx screws (too few and knife isn't as secure and too small results in the head wear/damage easy). My advice may not be useful but I hope it helps.

Good luck, post a sketch of the proposed knife and I'll start saving! :)

PS: Last recommendation, a special Bladeforums discount (50%) for all members. This is one recommendation that all would agree acceptable!

For those of us who aren't that familiar with the metric system, here is a rough comparison to a Military:

length overall 9 1/2" (241 mm)
blade length 4" (102 mm)
blade steel CPM-S30V
length closed 5 1/2" (139 mm)
cutting edge 3 11/16" (94 mm)
weight 4.2 oz (120 g)
hole diameter 9/16" (14 mm)
blade thickness 5/32" (4 mm) or .15"
handle material G-10

So the knife described is just a little bit longer than the military. I like the idea, as long as it doesn't weigh a ton. The military has all the beefy features for only 4.2 oz.

I'm guessing that since the "new knife" will have a compression lock, it will have "standard" full steel liners?

i put an pic of the drawing part covered by an police on my photobucket, the drawing is scaled down on the print...

as it will be an custom one i can play with the blade finish etc. as i love damascus steel i sure will make some with that.

the liners have an spl construction, its an goal to make it strong but light. this together with the new small bolster will make an strong lock. after test the first proto i see more where chances are needed or not.

many thanks for your interest.

What advantages would this knife have over the Millie? Better lock, compression. The Military gives you a big folder with strength "and" light weight. My next step up from a Millie would be a FB. Good luck!

Wow!
I'm very impressed with the design (I can't expect less from a Swiss Bianco knife  )

Is a really big monster what you propose. A little brother, a smaller version with a 90mm (3.5") will have great success!

I'm very interested to see how it ends, even if I could not afford it :(
Any chance to have a production model?

Sorry for my english :o

Looking at the picture, I think the Manix did pretty much the same thing as this knife would, and look what happened to that.

For the time being the Chinook III can handle pretty much anything you can throw at it, and is one of the most comfortable knives I've ever used.

I think that would be an interesting design. Cold steel seems to be the only ones making knives of this size and those models have always intrigued me. But I've never been able to justify buying one of the X2s because I wasn't sure I was going to actually carry it and I imagine that a Spyderco would be a lot more expensive. However, the super thick compression lock just may be what gets me. I'd love to this knife.

Hello swissbianco, you said you put the sketch in your photobucket or something like that, I am having trouble finding out how to get to your photobucket. Don't suppose you could post the sketch here?

Thanks.
