big spyderco folder - any interest?

Actually the grip looks quite nice :)

My Manix's pivot is approximately 5-6mm I think, I can't be sure cause my pivot screw has loc-tite and I don't want to unscrew it.

What about a laminated steel blade of zdp189 core?

Perhaps you could elaborate a little as to what function will this blade be?

For a while, Mr. Glesser spoke of a prototype he called the Bison, a megafolder, Spyderco style. I think the project was shelved. I'd love to see it come back! When you've spent some time with a Cold Steel Voyager X2 or a Camillus Cuda Maxx in your pocket, everything else seems for Hobbits!

i havent zdp material or suppliers for that.

checked the possible privot size, good 10 mm would be possible. the blade is shaped to look like an spyderco and, what is important for me, is verry useful shaped, it should be an real world tool.

have to say that the final version will look diffrent, this is only an first drawing to see in witch direction it goes. thanks for the feedback, looks im at least not complete wrong.

after the proto is done, its easy to scale down or up, making an larger blade variant. as im still in swiss and not allowed to do any sutch proto it needs time.

Big folder is easy to carry since you "half" the length when carrying.

However, a folder always have a long handle compare to a fixed blade which I find a pain to use.

I like the idea of a big strong spyderco folder. With at least 4.5" blade like one poster said above too....and a low ride clip. Would this design be capable of withstanding batoning and light prying?

with the 5mm thick blade and the selected steel/heattreat and the thick spine batoning is not the problem. but with any knife you should not pry, its not made for.

of course i can grind you an blade for that folder with close to no edge, so you can pry as mutch you like LOL.

Why are people obsessed with prying? I't's sorta like the forbidden fruit. You know you shouldn't. Or at least you should know...

But back to the starting topic...Yes, let's see a sturdy folder at least 4.5 AND bring back the Bison.

Think a large/big folder is great idea. I've been toying with getting a Benchmade LFK but can't get over how it looks while closed and also the grey rubber inserts -ick!

Just make the blade a practical one and not so "tactical."

practical is tactical.

currently we work on the agreement, im also busy with my green card paperwork and else, after the blade show, in usa, i start working in the prototype.

Trust me, I understand how you feel about prying with folders, expect them to break..............with that in mind, during my time on patrol, I did just that on more than one occassion. You do not think twice about it when you have to get into something in a hurry and your crow bar or fancy better suited tools are back in the trunk. Light prying on certain folders should be an added benefit, not the most important in general.

Folders are not prybars! I guarantee you that it will not stop folks from using them at times for just that. I am definately up for a big Spyderco, just because I really believe they will smack it out of the ballpark. Take care and God Bless.:D

Sorry to rain on everybody's parade, but this has been begged for for years and the Management reply has always been that they don't do big folders because they don't feel that the locking mechanisms are strong enough to keep five and six inch blades from folding.

Spyderco seems to be fascinated with the 3" (+/-) size blade and year after year introduce knives that they refer to as big cutting knives in small packages. You might find it interesting to go through their catalog and see how many they offer with blades between 2 3/4 and 3 3/4 inches in length.

I have three folders I absolutely believe I could stake my life on, Military, Chinook and Endura; they are 4", 3 3/4" and 3 3/4" respectively.

I'm not complaining, it's Sal's company and his prerogative, you have to respect him for that.

For now, if you want a decent manufactured mega-folder you've got to go with Cold Steel.

Really? The response I've seen is that they wouldn't sell enough of them to justify the expense of production.

Is there a thread or link you can provide to justify your statement?

If there is a problem with locks for bigger blades I'll give up on getting the new G10 Police that thing I believe should be 4.5+ ".

Thanks.

Swissbianco plans to do this model as a custom knife. It will be limited in number and he plans to license the trademark hole and the Compression lock from Spyderco to build his design.

The last time I got involved in one of those threads was at least four years ago so I wouldn't even want to try to search for it. I'm not even sure it was on this forum. At that time I was really active on about three or four other forums.

All I was providing was information that I had received to a request I had made. That doesn't mean that Spyderco hasn't got more than one reason for not wanting to produce a mega-folder, it was just the one I was given.

update on this:

i got my green card end of september and will be emigrate to usa next week. first folder project in usa will be this big folder.

the lizense agreement papers should be on its way and i can legally start with this as im back in usa, in swiss, that work is banned.

for the shot show its to little time but at the iwa and sure blade show we will have that one ready.

thanks for the interest
