Big stick or big knife?

i would want a big knife designed for thrusting like the hells bell fighting bowie. something like this is designed for killing (think boar hunting) unlike a walking stick. a slash wouldn't be of much use i would think vs. an animal in close. i would forget about axes and hawks to as they are too slow.

Both here is what I carry.

I saw a show about cougar attacks and a fella killed one with a buck 110 after having to get it out and open it! Now the gentleman did require many stitches and extensive reconstructive surgery but he lived and the cat died. Had he had a big knife his chances would have been better but if he had a stick he would surely have died as the cat knocked him off his feet as it attacked from a stalking position and leaped on his back with no warning.

:D:p:D
I also think that you may want to consider purchasing one of the Cold Steel spears. The only problem that I see with that option though, is how you would go about justifying carrying it.

Don't you guys ever listen to me? ;)The bushman, people, its a great knife that also happens to be a freakin spear head. If there is no time to stick it on, have a mora handy. A light thin blade like that is going to be very useful, if a big cats on top of you, imagine the types of defensive attacks you will be able to manage, a large thick chopper is not going to do it, IMHO.

If the mora isn't enough knife for you substitute for a stronger full tang one of your choice, but I really think a mora fits the bill here.

If you have a large knife, you can make a big stick with a sharpened point if you like. I don't believe the stick would help fashion a knife. :D

The thread about cougar vs. dog got me thinking. I personally wouldn't want to leave my dog behind and I know that many others around the forum wouldn't either. So if it were you and your dog out on a hike and you were confronted by a cougar, pack of wild dogs or worst case scenario a mother grizz or black bear, would you want a large knife or a sturdy walking staff to defend you AND your dog? Sorry guns not an option:D

Definately a large (pointed)stick/rod or a spear.I'd want to keep as much distance between me/my dog & the attacker(s).Especially if it's a mother grizz!!(In which I'd probably send my dog running, while I looked for the highest tree to climb:eek:)

Nice pics BTW:thumbup:
:cool:On 2nd thought..if it was a pack of wolves,I'd rather have a pair of wakisashis(short japanese swords,probably spelled wrong)...as if I'd ever be walking around with'em:confused:

I have the same walking stick. Thirteen inch blade 6 foot overall. Of course you can put any stick you want in it.

I love dogs, but if the wild animals have already engaged the dog, I'm taking advantage of the distraction and gettin' out of Dodge, weapon of choice being a good pair of trial runners!

If a cougar isn't on my back, it's rock and stick time. Predators don't like getting hurt and making yourself look difficult helps. If the cougar has jumped me, yeah, I'd like a good stout knife.

With wild dogs, I'd go for a stick. Like the cougar, they can't afford to get hurt.

Grizzly bear? Time to back off. When I was a kid, saw grizzlies in Yellowstone take the top off a steel Coleman cooler like it was cardboard. The power they have is just amazing. I'm afraid a pissed-off grizzly mom bear would take a stick out of your hand with one swipe and maybe you hand with it! I don't know if I could ball up and play dead while getting mauled, so I'll take the big knife option if actually being attacked. Like I said, if the bear is busy with the dog, I'm clearing out.

Like the old saying goes, if you are being chased by a bear, you don't need to be the fastest in the group, just a little faster than the slowest guy.

Either would probably work well enough with the right individual. I've a friend that works for animal control, its been 8+ years and a dog has never bitten him. All he carries is the staff with the loop on end, however, he was trained to use the staff as a weapon against mean dogs. An animal can't even touch him when he has it in hand. Of course its doubtful he could get a "kill", but chances are he could fend it off long enough for it to get discouraged. With the right luck (or training) anyone could do the same.

And there are several cases of people killing mountain lions with pocket knives, one was a senior citizen.

In Africa a 60++ year old guy killed an attacking lion with his bare hands. (Yes serious, it was on the news).

Its the individual thats the survivor, not the weapon he's carrying.

The "gun not an option" thing doesn't work for me. I ALWAYS carry.

Ditto. I know this is a Blades Forum, but if you're considering a stick as an alternative, then why not consider a gun as an alternative? Especially since so many of us here own and use firearms?

Part of survival is knowing your territory beforehand, by maps and reports. If I'm taking my dog into territory that I know might be dangerous for her by way of big predators, then I am going to carry a firearm. And a knife. And a stick.

I don't like either/or, this or that choices. Being prepared means carrying both this and that and something else.
