Big stick or big knife?

Of course, you can always strap a big pointy knife to the end of yer big stick and have the best of both worlds :D

I gona have to be unpopular also by saying bear spray Is my first line of defence.

That bieng said let me explain myself. When im hiking in the Humbolt unicorperated areas I carry a 357 if hiking or my benneli if im hunting. I normally have one small skining knife and somethimes a kurki or a hawk. I always have my sheperds crook hiking staff.

The 357 is really for mistaken encounters with pot growers and if I missed the bear or cougar with the bear spray. The gun isnt to kill anthing but to wound/confuse my attacker to help me get the hell away from there.

The Bear spray has been statisticaly proven to increase your chances of survival over a firearm. Most people dont calculate handguns are desighned for killing us with our Thoracic cavity average of 6 inches, with a bear we have a chest cavity starting at twelve inches. That combined with reports that bear skulls have been known to richochet hadgun rounds. Cutting a bear or cougar will cause a dump of adrelanin and initiate fight or flight responce, considering the animal is already attaching you witch course of action do you think it will countinue with increased veracity. If you dont belive me please call your local park range and inquire, this information has been proven.

Bear spray has been proven to have the oposite effect, no adreanal response, just nasea, burning, itching, and temporary blindness.

Basicaly I would use the stick for mantaining distance while pulling the spray from my left hip holster if its a bear. With the cougar I would blast myself in the face with the spay if necisary. However my spray holster is on my left side hip so im more likley end up dumping all eight rounds out of the snubie.

Without the gun, Basically I would be ok with the bear spay and a knife. I just wouldnt use the knife with a bear only a cougar or wild dogs. (although we dont have any wild dogs in humbolt, there are way to many black bears and cougars to alow a wild dog population.

PS I DONT MEAN TO OFFEND ANYONE WITH THIS POST, THIS POST IS REGUARDING MY PERSONAL EXPERIANCES.

Grenade, works well on bears, mtn lions, meth heads and sharks. Light, easy to pack or deploy and made to fit the hand.

Chicks dig it and know you are not the kind of guy that cries in the woods.

A stick for dogs. Big Cat? Probably F'ed either way, but I'd think knife, since he's probably gonna be on you before you know it. Bear spray is a good idea. PR brought up tomahawks. I'd carry one for sure, if I didn't carry my .357 snubbie everywhere I go. A little hammer pole, like the CS Trail Hawk, would ride easy in a kydex rig.

Ditto. I know this is a Blades Forum, but if you're considering a stick as an alternative, then why not consider a gun as an alternative? Especially since so many of us here own and use firearms?

Part of survival is knowing your territory beforehand, by maps and reports. If I'm taking my dog into territory that I know might be dangerous for her by way of big predators, then I am going to carry a firearm. And a knife. And a stick.

I don't like either/or, this or that choices. Being prepared means carrying both this and that and something else.

I will take a knife. You could make a long spear out of it to help your reach. But basically if attacked by a bear I am basically screwed.

Mommy won't let me play with those :o

I have always thought in the case of an attack from a predator, dog, whatever ,I would offer up my weak arm ( my left) and use my right to bring the wrath of god ........knife in hand of course . thats my plan anyway. Though Murphy tends to lay the best laid plans to waste.

I think the best line of defense from any attacking animal would be to always hike with a PETA Member, and some duct tape.

Cougars often attack from behind without warning. I prefer a long thin sticking knife in a quick draw sheath like the Kydex sheaths.

I carry an 8 inch double edged fighter secured on the outside of my clothing while cross country skiing. In a pinch it will also get you out of the water when going through the ice, something I don't want to repeat.

its obviuos that if you had a large pointed stick you must have had a knife to cut it! i would have a large stick in one hand and the knife in the other:D

Hmmm... Does a tree come under the category of big stick?:D If so it would be nice to have one of those nearby to clime!

In response to quotation:
A very primitive way of making a spear is by grinding it with a stone, or grinding and fire hardening the point. Either way, that doesn't really count as a big stick. Sure it starts off as one but then it becomes something else entirely.
When used right a spear can drop someone to the ground instantaneously and kill them within seconds. It could take minutes to subdue someone/something with a stick alone.

I think the reason that a gun was not mentioned in the title is because it was a comparison between a deadly weapon and a longer range not so deadly weapon(in the right hands it could be though). It's getting way off topic talking about using nades, bear mace, and even spears! But what do you expect, this is a discussion forum after all.

sorry about that off topic rant, I might be resposible for that.

back to the original post Knife first then stick but I do prefer both. (and some other things already mentioned).
