Biggest Diappointment of 2017?

Exactly. Hence you are never going to get a night and day difference between steels that all perform at well above average. S30V nor XHP deserve to be anywhere near the level of "low end" just because there is a buffet of fancy steel compositions out there now days. There are too many factors that play a part in edge holding. If any of us here got given S30, M390 and XHP on random unmarked blades i bet you a million dollars none of us would notice a difference in real world use. Whoever says they can, well...you just keep on thinking that :) I primarily carry M390 on my contego, S30 on a millie and XHP on a CS recon 1, and i can tell you at 18-20 degrees per side you could not tell them apart if the blades had no markings. That's on wood, cardboard, drywall, thick plastic and cutting heavy duty electrical wires on a very frequent basis.
You can easily get a night and day difference if you bother to use your knives, and not use these low end soft steels and just rely on stropping every day for the rest of your life. You would easily notice the difference between the steels when you sue them it's that simple, the longer you use an object the more wear it faces hence why elements like Tungsten and Vanadium are used. Again if you hard use the blade you'll see which one is going to hold it's edge longer. A dull tool or even tool that's getting there will struggle more. Even on the Forged and Fire show they easily show how much wear a steel can take and how much difference it can make on the next task. IE: Chopping ice then cutting a bag, flesh, or even artificial materials such as Nylon.

Are you implying i don't use my knives? i'd wager i use them more than 90% of people, i use them as tools for work. You can tell a night and day between very low end steels and higher tier, but not between S30, M390 and XHP all with good heat treats and geometry. That's the point im making here.

Obviously you're trying to claim that there is no difference between the three when there is. Cutting anything hard or abrasive will easily showcase the steel (blade) being used and how long it will last. Abrasion & Wear resistance will tell you how long an edge will last in a harsh environment like Drywall.

Did you just decide to ignore my main post? I clearly stated at the end, i cut drywall, electrical wire, carboard and thick plastic on a daily basis. And hear you are trying to tell me something i've seen and experience for years and years. There is a difference in chemical composition between these powdered steels, but please don't think that in real world use you're going to notice a night and day difference between M390, XHP and S30V. If you think you will you are dreaming. They all lose their shaving ability and keep a decent working edge for a decent amount of time. People need to get their head out the clouds with their super-steel assumptions. It's fun on paper to read and quote steel types, but you always reach a point of diminishing returns once the steel gets good enough. To notice big differences in edge holding you need to try steels like maxamet and others with similar composition, but then you sacrifice other characteristics of the steel like toughness. It's always a give and take.

Here for example is a small, simple run of the mill cardboard test i did on M390, XHP and S35VN. This is only one kind of abrasive, but still, it dulls the steel, and it's a common material cut by people, there was no night and day difference between them. http://www.bladeforums.com/threads/...ir-cts-xhp-and-a-little-m390-for-fun.1504946/

Your incisive honesty is disconcerting... you stop that.

Hey you might be in luck ; OJ gets out in October !

I wouldn't even wish her on him!!!
:D

Really Mick!! Your use of logic, facts and experience doesn't cut it here!!
What if those knives, with those steels.......were running on bearings? Sorry brother, couldn't resist!!
:D

This is the first year I haven't been interested in really ANY designs. But especially ZT, spyderco and Benchmade. Those are my favourite three brands and all didn't give out any new models I'm interesting in. First year I have had this issue before, no companies released a knife I'm very interested in purchasing. I may purchase the Benchmade 560 Freek, but not that excited or that motivated to... only half interesting design to me this year.

I'll hop on the train and say the PM3 is hugely disappointing. I suppose we got the scaled down version of the '2 people had been asking for, but there was so much more potential. Another design compromised by a lanyard tube, or 4 way clip mounting, etc. these little details that attempt to mass appeal but dilute the overall product. If anything I think the Sage 5 is much more in line with what I want in a 3" comp lock knife.

And Benchmade... well I haven't bought any new knives of theirs since the price hike - grabbed a few mini grips, an adamas, and a 710 just months before the announcement (sheer luck). The fact that they discontinued the 710 and the Ritter Grip is utter heresy. They gave us another poorly designed (imo) balisong - and their QC issues are inexcusable at the price level. The factory edges have gotten better I suppose... But man, thank god there's plenty on the secondary market to keep me satisfied.

Honestly Benchmade has killed off so many of its homerun knives. Now they are going to release a new line of all homerun knives for a second time?

Come on Benchmade, it's like some evil new executive took over the company and is transforming it into EVIL BENCHMADE. Benchmade I have so many knives I love from you why can't you just have some decency and act right?

The fact that it's a glorified RWL-34? The fact that when compared to even a properly done S30V it'll fall? The fact that even something like a properly done AEB-L can match it's performance. 440C is what you fanboys love and eat when in reality it's far from amazing.

You can't compare it with "normal" (m390 for example) steel you would have to compare it with other damascus steels and im this category it's great (edge retention, corrosion resistance).
This is like comparing H1 with M4 just by edge retention and saying: This H1 is bad I want my diving knife made of M4.

The Para 3 was dissapointing. But there were many other knives that are just not up to the designs I am looking for like,

*Here is a tutorial all folding blade makers should take note!!!!*
Please design and make more folding knives with these things in common:

1)Better grip to blade length ratio
2)No lanyard hole-we live well without them if the handles are smaller
3)No finger choil taking up real estate on blade length

and #4) the most important -centered blades please! If you have leaning blades (this includes traditional folders) then you need to reassess your whole front line on putting out each and every knife that is perfectly centered when closed!

a)strong detent on flppers
b)Slimmer blades and handles , Slimmer profiles all together. We have enough c)fat heavy thick chuncky bricks in production. DO SOME+THING DIFFERENT d)FROM EVERYONE ELSE. Stop copying what everyone else is doing.

#5Would love to see screws that are not these specialty screws but regular torx bits. All those propretery screws is silly. We aqlso all want knives we can EASILY disasemble and REASEMBLE w/o voiding the factory warranty.

PS
Auto knives like OTF microtech needs to revamp and re train all their customer service people for quick return and customer satisfaction.

One of the best and most consistent out there is still Spyderco with incredible different designs and at fair and a affordable prices. Mow Chris Reeve Knives( Sebenzas) has stood the test of time with their design and customer service. BUT here is a small tidbit of information,,,please bring back the old school solid washers on your 21's. instead of the perforated ones.

Finally I would love to see more makers use a rustproof steel like the Spyderco H1 series or Rustproof LC200N Blade!

Maybe you've heard of the Sebenza before? It sounds like that might have been the knife you were describing.

I am really starting to appreciate titanium framelocks or any folders actually, which manage to feel tough and dependable without being "overbuilt." Folders like the Zt 0452 or the 460.

I would love to see a company come out with a new line of advertising to take knives apart and reassemble. Along with training video on HOW TO to it in the proper steps and what NOT to do..

That could be their whole logo for the company because the premise would be so different and opposite from what everybody else is doing. They could do a lot with their marketing off that accomplishment to make knives to fit together right the same way they came apart.

Sebenza has been and is on the right track but with now that we have so many other new knife companies,, now they can adopt Sebenza framework and schematics to design even better knives which will include some of the other features I listed above and they should take them point by point and intergrate them, They don't have to look or resemble anything like a Sebenza. We all have had a really good blueprint from CRK for years and yet when people try and make something similar it is either to close or they make something completely retarded and /or ugly with it. Okay the fat knive craze is dome. You see these fat heavy knives with thick short blades being sold on the exchanges and passed from one owner to the next while loosing $ on each succeeding sale.

We need more MORE more common sense people taking over these established companies design depts. .. maybe someone like Nick Shabazz,
to be president or at least do consulting for them.

I tell ya. If I was a company like WE Knives I would be calling Nick Shabazz and making him my best friend. Free air flights. free hotel, expenses , fine Chinese food and Saki with massages thrown in.

If a Jew and a Chinese can get together they would rule the world.

I have to agree with the prices. Even several hundreds pricetags for cnc machined skeleton knives. Pathetic.

If you were a company that spews the garbage you do you'd be done before you began.
