Bird Knife

I've always used certain knives on any upland game I hunt,a woodsman fixed blade works well,model118 also a beauty, regular size trapper and a buck 110. I would give your jumbo trapper a go on those birds just to see how you like it ,should work great!Hope you have some good luck David!

Thanks, RAZOR. I am going to use my jumbo trapper at some point. It's mid-day and warm. I thought I'd clean them and fill my canteen. I used the Duke on these, just push it through the wing joint and pick the shot out. Both dogs enjoyed finding some birds. DM

Here is what I use to tune up my knife. This block of wood has SiC 400 grit applied to it. I carry it with me and while waiting for doves to fly
by I will check my blade for burrs. When I find them I'll strop that area on this stick of wood. Which straightens out the burr. Real easy tune up
while I'm waiting for action. DM

Thundering and Lightning outside, gonna forego the bird hunting this morning. I hope the sunflowers are still there next Saturday. I’ve got to get my boat off the lift and to the town ramp to get it out before the storm arrives Thursday, been doing hurricane prep since yesterday afternoon, a bit more to do today. OH

Each year on opening I take my dad's Lefever Nitro's Special, side by side, 20 ga. I should practice with it before the season but I don't. I missed the few dove that flew by. By mid-morning I switched to my Ruger Red Label, 20 ga and was able to down one. Dutch and I didn't see where it went down, just a general area. As it happened, it went down in a Russian Olive that was surrounded by a massive growth of grass, downed branches, barbed wire and stagnant water. Dutch was persistent, and in about ten minutes, with out getting poked or cut located and retrieved that lonesome dove. That made my day! He's a tried dog today and deserves a rest. Here's a group photo...

Teddy is dreaming of being a bird dog . He has been outside with me for a couple days. Im having a 30 x 40 pole building built and had to cut and remove sod plus remove some shrubbery. Been hot and dusty. I had bought a 10 x 20 building for storage and fortunately sold that. The mover picked that up friday.

Mak, Great work! It doesn't hurt to rest. That work will be there when you get ready. A 30' X 40' pole building is a good size. Make the kids
go out there when the poker game gets rowdy. DM

cut it out, your Super Black is a nice shotgun. That one can shoot the 3" & 3 1/2" shells. Hows the recoil on those cigar shells? Glad you got
out to enjoy your day. Does your dog retrieve? A 112 is a good choice. DM

Nice old Auto 5 you’re using David - as you know we both like Auto 5 shotguns and Buck Knives! I found a picture of my 321, don’t have too many pictures of it. Back to the use of the gut hook - it’s really not a cleaning tool per se, it’s a field tool to pull out the guts (lower internal heat, thus less spoilage) while you continue to hunt - the actual cleaning comes after the hunt. Much like gutting a deer, lowers the temperature, thus reducing spoilage while you age or clean the deer later. OH

OH, good info. & photo. I process mine 2 times, one at mid-day and the others at evening. I go through them and clip their wings. So, I'm basically through with most of the knife work. Then I peel and pull the breast out, while removing feathers. Then carry them and wash them
and pick shot out. Most all of our shot goes through. Our load is 1 oz. of #8's @ 1200. DM

David, those are nice looking dogs I bet they work great at finding downed birds. Thanks for the idea using the stick with some paper stuck on it to touch up your knives,i must make one for myself.Today was the first day for waterfowl youth hunt here, not many shots but logs of geese and ducks, just in the wrong locations lol.

Hawk, thanks. That would be a good one to use.
RAZORBLADES RAZORBLADES , I merely apply the loose grit directly to the wood. Think message it in with mineral oil. However, gluing sandpaper would work too. If you use sandpaper be sure to use the black, wet/dry type. DM

Dutch and I went again today, took the SBE II and shot better. Again, not many dove, downed two out of three. One, Dutch was in his crate, in the back of the Tacoma. He saw me shoot and the bird go down, my hunting partner let him out of the crate and he went straight to the area of the fall and after a bit of a hunt found the dove...that was amazing to watch.

pj, I like dog stories. And your Dutch is 4? I just noticed we have 2 gents on here with the Super Black Eagle II and 2 guys that go upland bird
hunting with a Browning A5.
OH, why did you have to show a picture of a old box of Rem. shot shells? DM

David, I’ve always liked the graphics on old sporting goods boxes (ammo, lures, cleaning gear, guns, fishing reels, etc.) and seem to accumulate it. Nice old box of slugs you have there - speaking of slugs, I still have one of the three boxes I bought at a little Gunshop in Aberdeen MD to deer hunt with on post (APG MD) in 1976 - Western. I’ll see if I can find it and take a picture (still have lots of stuff in boxes from the move). OH
