BK-19? UPDATE: SIGHTED AND PHOTOGRAPHED!

All this would be very disappointing considering this text on Kabar's website: "Designed by Ethan Becker, the BK19 shares select traits..."

^^^Yes, I agree with the above^^^
If Ethan wasn't involved, why wouldn't it just be a KA-BAR??

Adding the Becker name changes that equation somewhat.
Don't get me wrong, I love my KA-BARs, and yes even the EK Commando knives.

But a Becker without Ethan's involvement, even like a Becker/Fisk collaboration seems a bit odd.

LV,

Ok, so I went out for a bit this afternoon.

When I grow up, I want to be a weatherman.
Only job out there where you can be wrong 70% of the time and still stay employed.

But given our recent weather patterns, all is forgiven.

We haven't had any rain in 30+ days.
A light but steady rain started this morning around 03:00.

It was supposed to end before noon.
It didn't, but we need moisture.

Just because I didn't want to light a fire, doesn't mean I couldn't get one ready.

Last week I spied a block of White Oak left befind by the loggers.
This wasn't just any block of wood. Atom and his pals had eaten their way up through the middle

Leaving behind a natural Rocket Stove for someone ambitious enough to retrieve it.

I stuffed the hole with an eclectic mix of small bits of dried red oak, white cedar, birch bark, and some small maple branches, sourced from the nearby woods.

It all took off rather nicely,

While the fledgling fire was doing its thing, I played a bit with the BK-19.

This was a piece of very well seasoned white cedar,

Throughout this little adventure, we had some light, some steady, and even a bit of heavy precipitation.
But at least it was a dry rain, so I pressed on.

The 19 got the new Black Micarta slabs installed and some Para attached to the sheath and a lanyard.

I fed some smaller twigs and wood into the top and it got ripping pretty good.

But the rain was relentless and finally forced my retreat to a dry house and a hot home made pizza for dinner.

LV,

For the record, I pretty much agree 100% with Ethan's assessment of George Washington Sears. (Nessmuk)

I read his writings with great interest in my early years.
In many ways, he seemed larger than life to an aspiring young outdoorsman.

His depiction of getting by with his "Nessmuck Trio" fascinated me at the time.

It was not until much later in life that I discovered he may not have been the woodsman he pretended to be.

Much like a modern day Hollywood hero, his version was always Nessmuk centric.

It's not until you read the writings of others,
and sit around fires with descendants of folks who actually knew him that a different picture is painted.

He was described as more of a Raccoon than a woodsman.
Meaning he was a crafty opportunist.

Stories tell of how he always managed to stumble into an Adirondack Camp, just prior to dinner being served.
He would graciously partake of a shared meal he had no hand in, spend the night by a warm fire he didn't help make,
and be gone in the morning after breakfast before the dishes needed doing.

Had this been just one isolated incident, I would have dismissed it.
But the story is very much the same from many differnt tellers and locations.

These days, I view Nessmuk through different eyes.
I give him credit for what he did,
and that was inspire many budding outdoorsmen like myself to venture out into the wilderness.

As the writer, I admire him. as a person, what does it matter. We will never meet.
Life is seldom as we view it anyway.

All of the above, diminishes this new BK-19 Nessmuk in any way.
Call it what you want, it is a fine specimen of a woods bumming knife and fitting sibling in the Tweener Lineup

If the BK-2 is the Campanion,

The BK-19 should be the Kitchen King,

It's like a "Veg-O-Matic without any moving parts.

For those who have no idea what a Veg-O-Matic is;

It slices, it dices, it chops,

I used my 19 again this morning for breakfast detail,

Used the top of the Lodge Cook It All.

Eggs, country style sausage, red & green peppers, onion, garlic, provolone cheese,
Alpine Touch pepper and salt, and Everything Sourdough toast.

This knife is just fun to use,
