BK-20 vs Bk-9

Tracking shows my 20 should be here today! The question is do I need a 9 also? There has been some discussion of this in some other threads, but I was hoping to get some direct comparisons here. For example how do they compare for choping? Slicing? Balance? Ease of carry? Fine work? Battoning? Feather sticks?

If you have had enough time to use the 20, how do they stack up A to B?

Thanks

The 9 is a do-everything knife, take it by itself and it'll do whatever you want it to do. The 20 feels too large to be said knife, that being said it'll be a brutal chopper and has great balance for the size.

You can't not have a 9

I carry a large blade (now the 20) for heavy stuff, a smaller blade (3-4 in blade) for lighter stuff and a multitool.. Sometimes i carry a tiny 2 inch blade for carving just for fun.

Personally, i like having a knife for bigger tasks and a knife for smaller tasks, but if you do just want one, i think that the 20 will do the job just fine... Just know whether you choose the 9 or the 20 for your only knife, you will be compromising on smaller tasks.. Thats why I carry at least 2.. Its just my preference though, maybe you'd rather just have one large blade and that be it. Either way, you will love the 20 and if you feel the need for the 9, get it because you'll probably have one eventually anyways

To add to my previous post, the 20 hangs a little low but if you fold the belt loop over and lash it to the sheath it sits perfectly.. With me, it does fine work better than the 9, but judging by what others say i would be led to believe that it depends on the user

This might be a, which son do you love more kind of thing!and I find it offensive :D

Of course you still need a 9, Nimrod.
You can't not have a 9.

Get a 9. Come to your own conclusions. The 20 could chop the 9 too bits. Its a beast. Bit heavier though than 9 and blade shape/length make it bit less nimble/slicey. Will probably put a convex 3dge on my 20 after awhile. Will it do just about everything the 9 can do and more, probably. Might take little more effort though. Debatable. Its no doubt more durable than 9. Its a toss up for me 2hich like better. Perhaps time will tell. Love both, so far.Need to do more with 20. So far, very glad got a 20. I wish it had a leather sheath like the Kabar Big Brother has though. LOVE those sheaths. Have 5 of them and use them for my big Beckers and Busses alike.

Would the big brother sheath work on the 20? I really want a good classic leather sheath

It sounds like an insult when you put it that way LOL

He selected the name, not me...I did notice that, which is why I included it; but it was intended in good spirits. (Sort of figured he was expecting it, lol)

The weight is so close, honestly I would choose neither for a hike, but for anything that I would grab the 9 for, I would reach for the 20 for first now.
Its really a heck of a thing. Its such a big blade but feels much smaller and lighter in hand. Not in capability, but it effort to use and carry.

Big brother sheath fits the 9 like a glove. The 20 is too large for it, sadly. I might figure something out to make it fit though.

Let me know if you do! Thought about making my own but i don't have that kinda time right now. I want a classic leather old style sheath with the pin in it for the belt but haven't found one that also has a blade retention strap.. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough

Nimrod - The Bible states that he was "a mighty hunter before the Lord [and] .... began to be mighty in the earth". Wikipedia
hhmoore, No offense taken👍

So got back in town today and the 20 was waiting on me, first thought was it's heavyer than I was expecting. It should be a heck of a chopper! now to get a 9 so I can compare for myself!

Hey Nimrod.....

Where are you going and what are you gonna do when you get there?....... When I leave the bedroom with shoes on I have a SAK Rucksack model in the left front pocket..... When I leave gravel or pavement there is a BK11 with MacIntyre rig around my neck and usually a BK16 on the belt...... The Nine is great and I have carried it on many an adventure but unless weight and bulk are a real issue the Bundok will be going to the Boondocks with me...... The larger blade is more efficient at most stuff.....Of course a Stihl Saw is always an option if I am on wheels.......Lol........ But, Big Hoss is right..."You can't not have a Nine"..... Many laughs......

Thanks for buying your 20 and thanks for hanging out here...... I do hope your new Becker works it's tail off on your behalf.....

All Best....

Ethan

"You can't not have a Nine", haha, coming from Mr. E, I love it!😄. "The larger blade is more efficient at most stuff"..coming from the man that designed them both I will take that to heart!

I tend lately to have an Opinel in my pocket (#7 work, #9 outdoors) for fine work and keep a BK-4 in my SUV for beating and prying things and grab it if clearing for a deer/turkey blind and shooting lanes. May have to add the BK-20 for cutting the even bigger stuff! Well maybe it is better for flipping Becker Burgers too then😝 (LOVE that recipe from the Joy of Cooking by the way!)
