BK-20 vs Bk-9

Hey Z.....

Glad to see you here..... I wish I had thought of that a little earlier ...... I woulda done a comparison...... Burger steak for dinner....,LOL......

Ethan

yeah boss, been absent for a while, bummed about missing the gathering, but will be lurking here more frequently!

now we need a burger-flipping showdown between the 9 & 20.

^ Indeed.

So I actually went and tried out my 20 today against my 9 and 21. This is just personal preference but I still like the BK9 for an all-around woods knife. When you first pick them up the weight difference between the 20 and 9 doesn't seem that drastic, but the more I used them the more I noticed it. When trying to make shavings all three could shave off very thin slices but the 9 being the lightest, I felt like I could carve for longer without fatigue and it just kinda seemed a little easier in general but the 20 and 21 had factory edges while the 9 had been through the Work Sharp. When chopping the 20 hit harder than the 9 but it wasn't as tiring to swing the 9 so I felt I could make up for the weight difference with speed and endurance. I don't think there's a clear winner and it's going to be a subjective thing.

Hey Bighoss....

We are all looking for the "One Knife" that will do all the things we want to do better than any other
Knife that ever is or ever was....... I have been on that quest for most of my life and can only say,"I'am a workin' on it!!!.......I think I am getting closer if the knife is in my hands..... CMRickand I were doing comparisons between the 9, 20 and 21 yesterday and it was interesting.....we were in my neighbors bamboo grove, cutting culms that were two to three and a half inches in diameter.... The thin wall one year growth culms yielded better to the 9 and 21 and the older thicker walled stuff was easier felled by the 20...... As we all get used to the new tool I think the consensus will be in favor of the twenty, as it has a bit more weight and reach and damned good balance..... Thanks for trying to be objective...LOL....

Please tell us there is video.

There is a video on YouTube of the 20, 21 & 9 in action, just do a search.

The only one I could find was by some fat idiot who couldn't catch his breath and was panting most of the video. And he spelled 'big' with two G's. Real winner, that guy. In fact I think he wrote the 29th post in this thread.

I'm the one that told him that (in this thread, anyway); but you can have the heaps of praise since you've probably said it more often than me.

Excuse me, reply #1 was me saying as much.

check yourself. -_-

Checked. It still wasn't him, though....and the new guy still can't not have a 9.
Help yourself to the amount of praise to which you feel entitled. I'm no more concerned about that than I was previously.

There was a couple times during that video I was worried that guy was gonna have a heart attack! But I laughed when he said he was tired and the camera fell over...

I wanted to revive this thread so it could be undated.

So after a summer/fall and now winter of use so far, how feel you about these two fine tools?

I have both, but haven't gotten to use the 20 much so far.

Updated thoughts?

Thanks for bringing it back!

I used the 9 to chop a 4x4 when I first got it. It works good.
I've used the 20 numerous times to chop and delimb saplings and branches since it came home.
It works gooder.

I did find the 9 more adept at cutting a long strip of loose carpet.

While it's true you can't not have a 9, you kinda can't not have a 20, either. Too bad nobody that doesn't have one can't easily get one.
Is that enough double negatives for everybody?

If you don't find either of these to your liking, and really want to flip the burgers (haven't tried that yet...) all I can say is SMATCHET!

Or just a spatula! I'm glad I got another chance at a bk20, as they are getting harder to find and will continue to as more time goes by!

Does anyone know how many bk20s were actually produced?

I too prefer a larger knife and a smaller knife ... along with a SAK and/or multi-tool. The Tweeners make great "smaller" knives and given my passion for the 5, it should come as no surprise that I like the 15 ... but they are all great. In fact, the BK16 is about as perfect as you can get in that size/weight range!

The BK-20 is a superb larger knife and chops like nobody's business - even better than the BK9 and my beloved BK4. With that out of the way ... you can't not have a Nine.
