BK12, Is it really better steel?

I think we need a definitive "best method" for etching derived from the collective experience here, and it needs to be a sticky. Just a thought.

I can do a write up of the PCB etchant method, but I've never done the 9v battery way. The videos on youtube look pretty straight forward, but they are all bare blades, not coated ones.

Without having etched anything, so take my comments in that light, it seems the methods that rely on electricity would be more repeatable than those that rely on "pure chemistry." I am vaguely aware of people not being able to get chemicals that worked well, while the solution for the electrical method seems to be easy to replicate from easily obtained materials. All that remains then is a reliable source of "properly configured" electrical energy, and this too seems easy enough to obtain.

I think it was Tanker 1/66 who had a good write up of the "electrical" method. I will be interested to see what 91bravo thinks after he has used more than one method.

I would think that etching an uncoated blade - regardless of method - would affect the steel surrounding the logo, as well; requiring some finish work after the fact.

Is that blade still coated? I was wondering how the leads would make contact with the bare metal if the knife is coated. I want to try my hand at etching with a 9v battery this weekend.

Nope the blade still had the coating but I was going to strip it. I just set the laser etch deeper. I just cleaned off a spot for my positive lead. I used an old DC power supply from a Dell computer. Works great with vinegar.

Repeating myself, once it is determined by consensus what the best method is, I believe a sticky would be a good idea.

i have doug's #4 in the BK12, as that's my Beckhead number, and the BK4 and stuff. cuz i'm the machax guy, derp :D

Rowen might have a slight edge in heat treat, but let's face it, 99% of the KaBar Becker users will never be able to tell or see any advantage in day to day use. EVER.

stop speculating. :D

Bumping this with a shout out to 91bravo: Would really like to know how your planned etching went? If you have good stuff to tell us, you might consider starting a new thread.
Thanks so much,
Gun Doc

I was just on the Ka-Bar website looking at a replacement sheath and I happened to glance at the warranty and caught this.

This sucks.

This doesnt suck.

I think it is common knowledge here that Ka-Bar usually goes above and beyond when it comes to their warranty, despite their verbiage.

did you break your knife? not yet? the order of the day is "chill out"

if you break it, and your story is good, then just tell it as it is.

otherwise, use it as it was made, and use it hard.
