Ok folks, Update time!
The 14 arrived from Josh on Thursday, and I didn't get a chance to open it until Much later that night.
I normally prefer a bit larger of a knife, not much larger, but more so nonetheless. I didn't think that a small traditional would be quite as comfortable, considering I am accustomed to a four finger grip. A little ways back, I was inquiring about a knife for my Grandfather, and a 14 was one of the front runners, so my interest was piqued additionally when I heard that I was going to be receiving one.
That brings me to where we are now.
I touched up the edge when it landed, and it is Very thin BTE (I didn't measure it, but I would venture a guess of .010 - .015), with a little beef left in the tip. During this time, I started to get a feel for the knife, and I could see that it was genuinely comfortable to hold. Not that it was "just acceptable", or it was OK in a pinch grip, but the knife actually fit my hand really well. Still smaller than I would have presumed that I would like, but comfortable none the less. This knife lands perfectly at the end of my ring finger, and for a smaller, thin stock knife, I don't think that I would ask for it to be any different.
The knife has spent all day with me yesterday, and I used it a bit for various tasks since my daughters 3rd birthday is coming up (plastic tags on clothing, boxes and tape, an apple for each of us, et al). It took me a day of use, and some time thinking about the knife to actually put it into its "place", since I tend to categorize things.
To me, This knife showed me why folks have fond memories of their grandfather's knife. That trusty companion that he always had in his pocket but never put anyone on edge, never was flashed about, never did anything other than what was needed and then back home it went.
Yes, this knife is small. Yes, it does fit (most of) my hand. Yes, this knife disappears in the pocket. Yes, this knife helped me realize why my 82 year old Grandfather, who wears a size 18 ring, carries a peanut daily. And Yes, this knife should last me until I can pass it down to my Grandchild.
Josh, Thank you for helping me broaden my horizons. I normally would have balked at the size and pattern, and I would never know what I was missing. 50 years from now, if I am still kicking, I will peel an apple with this knife and thank you for the opportunity.
All the Best.
