Blade-play in top-shelf production knives.

My knife collection is very large; Spyderco makes up the largest part of my collection. I have notice that although Spyderco makes an excellent folder, most of my Spyderco models (both FRN and SS scales) have had some degree of lateral blade-play NIB. Most have just some slight flex at the pivot when the blade is wiggled back and forth, but some have some definite blade wiggle side to side. Now, Spyderco remains my favorite company for folders, and I ussually am not bothered by slight lateral blade-play in a new knife. However, I've notice that companies like Cold Steel, Benchmade, and even CRKT seem to produce knives with less blade-play than Spyderco does. Nevertheless, I continue to purchase Spyderco more than any other knife company.
Has anyone else noticed this?

IMO it varies a lot...I got a Delica with a more than normal blade play for lockbacks (lockbacks tend to usually have verticle play and it's normal) but at the same time, my caly jr, and caly 3 have almost none.

If you're looking for top shelf production knives, I recommend buying William Henry, Chris Reeve, and Klotzli. These knives do not suffer from blade-play issues.

you are only going to have zero tollerences when someone spends the time to hand fit a knife together.

other than that its a crap shoot. win some , loose some

Unlike Buck, Coldsteel, Queen, Benchmade and others, spyderco proudly claims that some up and down play in their lockbacks is normal. They claim that if you get one that locks like a tank, that's normal too, but a little up and down play, that's OK.

Now side to side, I've never read a spyderco prounoncement on that problem. However, side to side play is generally not acceptable in a pinned construction knife. If the pivot is adjustable, a little tightening is all it needs. This is normal maintenance. My experience with 3 spyderco linerlocks is that they all develop severe side to side play. I had this repaired once by spyderco and had the same problem a few weeks later. Since then, I adjusted it myself and anchored it with some locktight and it's been good for a few years.

I had the same experience as you "I've notice that companies like Cold Steel, Benchmade, and even CRKT seem to produce knives with less blade-play than Spyderco does. Nevertheless, I continue to purchase Spyderco more than any other knife company. "

This coupled with three other things (a) unsatisfactory warranty service (b) change in warranty policy (they no longer repair things they used and they now charge for what used to be free) plus (c) they don't stock spare parts for knives out of production, lead me to my solution to this problem. I ceased buying spyderco knives.

Guess what? I've had no problems with blade play, no floppy liner locks, no screws falling out, no postage charges to send it in, and no more arguments with Spyderco customer service. The good thing about spyderco quality and poor repair/warranty service, is I'm no longer afraid to fix my own knife and I've learned how to adjust liner locks better than the factory repair man.

Expand your horizons...buy something from a different company :)

what 400 dollar knife were you referring to? IM me if you want.

He probably means Strider, and Strider blade play can be fixed by tightening the hex bolt with a spanner. the only ones ive seen with bad bladeplay with were the frame locks (smf, SNG), the liner locks dont develop it as much (for me) and a spanner fixed it each time.

Maybe I got lucky, or maybe you got unlucky.

I have two Spydercos, a Delica and a Native III. Both are Japanese made. Neither has any blade play in either the horizontal or vertical. I also have a BM ascent. No blade play.

This may get a certain amount of negative feedback, but I have only owned Japanese made Spydercos. Is there any difference in the fit and finish of Japanese Spydercos vs. US made? The Japanese are know for holding tight manufacturing tolerances. (Thank W Edwards Deming for that.)
I have no US made Spydercos, and only two Spydercos overall. Not enough data to form an opinion. Just a weird idea.

Yes,I have, and told this on this forum. And then there were some people
furiously denying it and even one person was telling me that I was "insulting a good company" by saying so. I also like Spydies a lot. But compared to
other "good companys" I think side to side blade play occurs to much,
specialy in their SS models.

Funny thing is I've read severaly times by Spyderco representatives on the Bladeforums Spyderco section that side to side play is not good, is not normal, but is covered under their no problems warranty and is fixed for no charge.

I also own every version of the Delica 4 and Endura 4 and none have side to side play. Gosh, I must be really really lucky; maybe I should go play powerball or something.

If side to side blade play occurs so frequently, warranty and fixed for
no charge are not enough. When there is blade play, there is something wrong with that folder and Spyderco is trying to fix that when you send it in.
But are they learning something from that flaw, so it wont happen in the future models. SS Spydies do not have an adjustable pivot pin, so when
there is side to side blade play, there's nothing you can do about it but sending it back.

How do you determine that it happens frequently? By the two or three people who listed in this thread? That is hardly frequently.

you think that sucks?.. try buying a 400 dollar knife and it having blade play:barf:

I was going to say the same thing. I've also had customs that cost more than that that had the same slop in the lockup. (And no, not all were Striders although I think it's funny someone immediatly thought this was alluding to Strider framelocks.:) )

Actually if you have side to side play in a knife with visible pins (i.e. not hidden), you can easily whack it yourself and fix it. Be gentle, since if you over whack it, you can't go back with a pin. I've never done it with flush/hidden pins, but it may work too. You'd need to protect the finish with leather.

I have, so far, three good folders: A Delica 4, CRKT S-2 (large) and a CUDA EDC in 154CM. Just checked all three. No blade play in any direction.

I carried the Delica 4 on work days and the S-2 on weekends and other days off for about six months. I've been carrying the CUDA EDC full-time for a couple weeks, during which time it's gotten a lot of open/close exercise with me trying to work out how to handle it smoothly.

I don't have any experience with Spyderco warranty, but I do have experience with Benchmade warranty - and I have to say that BM warranty service is truly exceptional. They definitely stay behind their products

I think the bladeplay is not acceptable. If I would want a knife with a bladeplay I can go to flea market to buy some Chinese rubbish.

This coupled with three other things (a) unsatisfactory warranty service (b) change in warranty policy (they no longer repair things they used and they now charge for what used to be free) plus (c) they don't stock spare parts for knives out of production, lead me to my solution to this problem. Please, Brownshoe, can you elaborate (especially "(a)")?

I've bought at least ten Spydercos. One of them (my para) had vertical play, and my Spyderfly had a bent latch, but the other eight were perfect.

Most of my knives, be them CRKT or Kershaw or Benchmade, have no play.

My 2 cents worth, 2 spydies, both have vertical play. Still good knives, but the fault is there.
