Blade-play in top-shelf production knives.

I've got over 30 spydercos. Not one has any blade play whatsoever. I've never seen it at all in a spyderco. What are you doing to these knives? JL

I think I have around 25 spydies now, my Delica 3/PE and Endura 3/PE have that little up/down wiggle which is barely noticeable unless it's a really hard, fast cut, but none have side to side play. I have 4 D4's and an E4 - they have no play.

What do you do with your 30+ Spydercos besides looking at them? Are your
knives real users, because no Spyderco that I know came with blade play
right out of the box. It is something some knives develop during use. Real use.
I dont mean abuse, but the kind of use a working knife should be able to take, without developing to much play.

Hugh, my unsatisfactory warranty service has been a combination of things. First, multiple unreturned e-mails and phone calls. Second, they wouldn't repair a knife that needed a clip re-installed. The clip failed due to poor design, it was screwed into micarta. All they needed to do was to tap in a nut to screw the clip back on. They replaced that knife with a different model. The replacement knife got loose within 1 day. Shipped it back, they "repaired" it and it got loose with 1 week. Fixed it myself and it's been tight for years. Third, they denied warranty service on something I thought was a problem with the steel. I then said OK replace the blade and I'll pay...spyderco doesn't do that for japanese knives. Fourth, I have knives that I bought when sharpening and minor repairs were free...part of the package. Spyderco has renegged on that offer and now charges. Finally, spyderco has stated on this forum that their warranty/repair service department was deficient and they have sacked staff and/or reorganized warranty repair not once but twice in the last 3-6 years. I took the excuse the first time as legitimate, but the second time, it appears to be a management problem and spyderco management hasn't changed. Too many benchmades, queens, bucks, al mars, case, etc. out there to mess with spyderco anymore.

I was going to say the same thing. I've also had customs that cost more than that that had the same slop in the lockup. (And no, not all were Striders although I think it's funny someone immediatly thought this was alluding to Strider framelocks.:) )

Just going from my experience :)

Striders take a lot of flak here, and most of it is unwarranted.

My only Spydie is not nearly as tight as my benchmades. I see Sydies as some of the best "affordable" knives on the market. Since they are more affordable that benchmades, you will see differences in quality between the two. Being a bit looser than benchmades doesn't stop them from being very good cutting tools.

I only have 2 Spydercos - a ten year (approx) old Delica that has seen a lot of use and a Centofante 3 that has had minimal use. Both have no discernable blade play. My only experience of a knife that was really bad is a Queen Mountain Man that has extreme lateral and vertical play. Queen Cutlery never responded to any emails re warranty.

I guess a legitimate discussion with you is out the question.

BTW, little to none of the knives mentioned in this thread are "top shelf" production knives.

I have a D3 PE that i've been using hard for the past 4 years, a Native S30V which has pretty much been my beater knive for the past 3 years & a Salt1 that i've been using for all outdoor activites for about 2 and a half years or so, I'm very sorry to report that not one knife has any play and all function flawlessly  :)

Thanks for the info.

That's about as silly a question as I've ever heard. Buy a knife and not use it? Truthfully, I don't abuse them. I use them strictly for cutting. Just what they were designed for. I don't abuse them with Spinewhacks to see how much they will take before giving. My earliest spyderco I got in 1990. I have an endura I still carry every now and then from around 91. It still locks up tight. I use the right tool for the job, and if the knife isn't it, I won't try to make it fit then claim the knife is bad when the tip breaks or it gives in. I also try to use the right knife for the cutting job. Sorry about your theory about
my knives being safe queens.

I also own Benchmades, Microtechs ( one in S90V now:) ), Mcusta, Mission, Kershaw, CKRT, Kabar, Ontario, Queen, Case, etc, etc, etc. JL

Now side to side, I've never read a spyderco prounoncement on that problem. However, side to side play is generally not acceptable in a pinned construction knife.

Funny thing is I've read severaly times by Spyderco representatives on the Bladeforums Spyderco section that side to side play is not good, is not normal, but is covered under their no problems warranty and is fixed for no charge.

If side to side blade play occurs so frequently, warranty and fixed for
no charge are not enough. .

How do you determine that it happens frequently? By the two or three people who listed in this thread? That is hardly frequently.

You dont want a discussion, you are 'a priori' allways right.

Then why bother addressing me, especially when my initial post had little to do with you?

Sorry, I was just asking if you use your knives. Every folding knife that has
a life of real use will develop some play over the years. That is inherent to
the construction of a folder. To much play is an other thing.

Grasp your knife firmly in your hand and then hold the point of the blade
between your thumb and indexfinger, then move the blade side to side,
holding the handle steady. Do you feel movement between handle and blade?

Your reply in post 14 was a verbal wanking. I guess we see each other eye to eye.

My reply in post 14 was about your question in post 11, if you should go play powerball. I suggested that this was a good idea. Call that verbal wanking?

Oh I'm sorry, when you quoted my post #13 (the post where I asked a fair question) in your post #14, I incorrectly assumed you were actually answering my question by telling me to go play powerball and that my questions were not worthy of an answer since your point was clear. Foolish of me to think that. I should have known you quoted post #13 as a clear indication that you were replying to post #11.

BTW we are at 2 to 1 now. ;)
