Blade tip exposed out of handle issue Spyderco models ?!

His statement initially is suggesting that something is fundamentally wrong with Spyderco designs. ( not only for him and a handfull heavy sharpeners . ( your 1%)

Alex says with a Manix only a handfull sharpenings shows the problem of the point sticking out. Any experience with the Manix that confirms that?

Like I said, it’s made up drama. He over sharpens because that his schtick. He’s a maker of YouTube content, not some guy on a ranch using his knives hard everyday. Give me a break.

I got a behind the scenes shot of Alex getting ready to film.

On some of my knives if I jam my finder tip as hard as I can I can sometimes feel the tip of the blade. I don't do that as common practice, you can draw your own conclusions why.

It's a legit concern if you own one knife and use it for years and years.


Honestly, guys like us own dozens of knives and the rotation saves the knives from this fate. And people who own one knife usually own a gas station knife that gets thrown away when dull.

He's one of the very few that brought up heat treatment and blade geometry on knives.

While others couldn't help but fall all over themselves, to praise every knife... there he was.

He always puts out great info on sharpening. How to, equipment..

Have an issue with a knife, that most people never will, because it's popular... now you don't know squat... terrible person... pile on...

It is a well-known fact, especially to traditional knife users, that use and sharpening over time will often result in an exposed blade tip. Reprofile the tip or file the kick and the problem goes away. It is analogous to using a pencil down to the nub... it doesn't mean the pencil is at fault. However, if there's an issue NIB, send it back.

I am not the only person who posted in this thread that I have found much of his content useful and thoughtful, but this video was presented in an overly dramatic fashion, unnecessarily.

And I've had blades that peeked and bit me. It CAN happen, it won't necessarily happen, and in most instances is unlikely to happen.

It could have been presented with less drama.

You are taking these critiques personally, Mk-211 , and that too is unnecessary.

However, if there's an issue NIB, send it back.

I don't see an issue here.

Well if what Alex says about the Manix is true “ only after a hand full of sharpenings shows the point sticks out of the scales” ” there is an issue I would say with that model. I would be embarrassed when that happened with a knife costing that much . I have no reason to doubt Alex on this. ( My only problem with the video is the idea I got from the beginning of the video that made me think that lots of Spyderco’s had a design flaw all together ….but even that might have been my perception )

No, I immediately thought the same thing...like I was missing the fact that my Spydercos were ticking time bombs...

And if it does happen, you just grind a bit off the spine to lower the tip. No big deal.

If you are such a heavy knife user and sharpener , as to have this problem , you should be capable of fixing it !

Not a "design " issue , IMO . More a maintenance thing , if anything .

I've personally not ever had this problem or ever even heard of it .

Same issue with some Buck 110 slim selects I have. I just file down the spine. Problem solved.

On some designs, if he feels the need for excessive reprofiling, he could also adjust (grind) the tang, like on the Manix 2:

I have had a couple of the Spyderco salt knives that I used a lot on the dock and in the ocean working as a diver in Hawaii and I cut heavy rope, firehoses, gasket material, monofilement and fishing nets and a slew of other stuff every day for 5 years and that steel is not hard so I sharpened it on a regular basis on my wicked edge and those blade are not out of the handles at all.
