This is a very serious test of HONESTY. Are you ready? The proctor will strictly enforce the one hour time limit.

Here it is:

If you use a Sharpmaker, do you use the ....SAFETY RODS..... E V E R Y ..... time you use it? Touchups, full sharpen, couple strokes for good measure....EVERY time????

Dat's it. Answer HONESTLY. Your destiny in ....eternity....may depend on this. Or....possibly WORSE....your POSTING PRIVILEGES may be revoked.

For those who DON'T use a Sharpmaker, well, we all probably know where they're going anyway.

:)

When I had a Sharpmaker 204, I used those brass (protective) rods for awhile, but then I got lazy (& cocky) and stopped using them...However, I never did slip-off the hones and cut myself without 'em, so for me at least, their use/value was a moot point as I'm very careful (and slow) around sharp (or soon to be sharp) things...:).

Walking Man.....welllllll......it will be...... c o n s i d e r e d .

A small ..um..donation would be a good start.

I haven't used it for a while so I honestly don't remember. I know I've used it without before though.

Same for me.

I can be completely honest here when I say I have always used them.

For me sharpening, apart from making my knives sharp, is a sort of mental therapy exercise. It's a little ritual I go through to relax and get my mind off stuff that I'd rather not think about for a while and stuff like that.

I get the Sharpmaker out and a bit of rag I use and the pencil eraser for cleaning the rods and a bit of leather I use for stropping and I set all this out with, of course, the knife and then I set everything up and away I go for a bit of quality time. It's not something I want to rush through and it's usually a pleasant and relaxing experience.

Zen and the art of sharpening.

i always use them when i am touching up - but when i am checking the edge profile to determine if a new knife needs to be re-profiled - i use some magic marker and i do a few quick passes without them. all of the scars on my hands will tell you that this is most likely a very unwise idea - but I havent been bitten by my sharpmaker...yet :footinmou

I'm with gajinoz on this. When I take out the Sharpmaker, it's serious business :) I set it up carefully, rods not being used off to the side and ready for their turn, chamois ready for buffing.

Safety rods? Me? Old Blood-on-the-Counter? You bet.

No. Most of the time I don't. If I'm sharpening long knives (4+ inches) then I do, every time for the long ones.

It depends. For those knive that I think is easier to cut myself in sharpening, I do use the rods. Otherwise, not necessarily.

It never occurred to me not to use them. I used to cut myself shaving with an electric razor, so I try taking no chances with sharp blades.

I get to answer yes on this one. Probably because I leave it assembled, sitting on the bookcase with the rods in place. I will admit to using a set of crock sticks without the safety rods but that was years ago.

Every time. It only takes a moment's inattention to cause yourself a serious injury.

I don't know how it could slip off so badly
Anyways, I free hand and I cut my self only once. (finger ran off the end of the dog bone and my ring finger was in a bad position)

well I started with the rods, then without the rods, then without the base, then I broke one of each stone in half to make pocket stones....freehand's the way to go now...

I used to always use them, but don't always anymore, unless it's a serious reprofiling job. I never use them for touchups and have never had a problem with or without the guards.

I use the rods all the time as a matter of habit.

A deep cut is often one slip away. :p
