always use the brass rods these days.

i cut my thumb bad when i was about 10 years old sharpeing on something like a sharpmaker. that is the reason!

ahh.....i remember it vividly. i seem to remember my thumb tip jumping around on the ground like a lizard tail. lol
 
Have always used the brass rods, don't know why, just a habit from the start. A bit like putting on the seat belt when getting in a vehicle.
 
Once when the sharpmaker was new, now the grey stones sit in the base in my kitchen for touchups on the chef knife.
 
NO, not always, just the second time sharpening after every time getting cut, i just imagine my sharpening skills exponentially rise everytime i sharpen :D
 
One time I was not going to use them (last time I touched up). But when it came to the 722 and had to do the secondary edge, so I was pointing the knife down, I was afraid I would slip and stab myself.
