I have been using a sharpmaker for about 15 years now and have never cut myself using it and have never used the safety rods. I always give the sharpening my full attention and don't try to rush it.
Always use them, but I have to admit that I freehand with the rods sometimes for minor touchups and feel guilty about the fact that I'm probably buggering up the edge angle.
I WANT to use them. I TRY to use them. I think it's SMART to use them. But every so often I finish sharpening and realize the rods are just sitting there on the counter. I manage to use them about 98% of the time.
definately depends on the length of the knife. Amazingly, I have never had a mishap--having said that, I may be in for a hospital visit this afternoon--maybe I'll use them.
I guess I am bad! I have had a sharpmaker since 1986 and only use the rods when doing large knives. I basically don't use them on folders but always use them on fixed blades.
I never use the saftey rods. In my own defense, I clamp the base to my work bench and use both hands to hold the knife that I am sharpening. I find this way I get an even hold on the knife and it makes it much easier when using the Sharpmaker to sharpen the longer knives. This method works great for me!
