BladeForums 2024 Traditional Knife

Did I miss the posts where Spark was blamed? I scrolled back several pages and did not see any.

Well, some guy with no financial stake jumps in after Spark says there’s almost 200 knives unsold and wants to share the super helpful opinion that it’s an ugly knife? I’d say anything’s fair game.

It’s like telling your wife when your at dinner that her dress makes makes her look fat.

Someone might offer to sell me a lot of widgets for my widget-enthusiast friends to purchase, but if I know that the widget in question is one my friends wouldn't be super jazzed about - or even one I'm unsure my friends would be super jazzed about, for whatever reason(s), I'd likely decline the purchase - probably after polling my friends on their level of interest in a widget of the proposed specifications.

What a shame that the yearly BF knife has come to this, all because of folks being upset at the price being paid on the secondary market for past BF knife models. Prices used to be held down for members as were numbers produced, but unfortunately some folks took advantage. Because of this "flipping", rules were set to try and limit or stop the practice, but the rules were not practical and added to the complexity of sales.

People can sell their property for whatever they wish, and aftermarket prices reflect the popularity and scarcity of the item. For example, Charlie's lambfoot patterns bring more than the original price, even double or triple the price (or more) that the original owner paid. There are no worries about the secondary market on the 2024 BF as the original price was high and there were several hundred available. Flippers will always do what they do, whether it be a limited production knife, football tickets or Taylor Swift concerts, that is just fact. If they can't make money on the product, they won't buy it to begin with.
Really ???

You and me both.

If I could find a nice user at a good price, I'd rehandle it in something durable and classy (almost-black maroon linen micarta maybe?), throw on a serpentine shield, and call it a day.

I'd have to handle one in person to know, but I can imagine the covers looking pretty nice after some good honest wear.

For me, it's a bit of a catch 22 - since redyeing mine, I carry it almost daily and it's beginning to look very nice in a suit of some good, honest wear. However, if I hadn't redyed it, I don't think I'd have ever carried it enough for the good, honest wearing to even really begin.

I think it comes down to that some of the original dye jobs were darker then others, compounded by the expectations and perceptions of the dye job by the individual recipients. If someone is thrilled with the example they received, who am I to say they're wrong? To me, though, mine looked like soggy oatmeal with less brown sugar than I'd have liked. But that's just me. I still think that choosing a corset shield over a serpentine shield was a missed opportunity and if that opinion upsets anyone, well, that's kinda on them. It's just my opinion, though I stand by it.

I really think I'd have preferred it in a micarta though. Number one, it may have helped to keep the cost down so that more of the community could participate in enjoying it. Number two, it's a heavy knife but, even so, the bone covers are not much, if any, more substantial than what is found on much lighter, smaller examples. I'm convinced that if a knife this heavy were to drop to the sidewalk, for instance, the bone covers are going to have to either absorb a serious impact - or break. While breakage could occur with most cover types and though I try not to drop nice knives, especially with users, poop happens. In my mind at least, micarta covers are capable of absorbing more unexpected bumps and bruises than bone. For a serious user, I prefer it.
