BladeForums BEST BOWIE - 2011 Edition - Voting CLOSED, Finalists Selected

Guys - great submissions continue, but as I mentioned at the outset:

Finally - only two "please don'ts". Comments on and discussion of the knives posted is most welcome and encouraged, but please don't quote an earlier post and reproduce the image already shown. This can lead to confusion when it comes to tallying votes, as the same knife shown 2 or 3 times has its votes scattered. Also, please refrain from voting until nominations are closed and the opening of voting is announced.

If you've quoted an earlier post, or posted a knife already nominated, please go back and edit out the pictures. And if you've nominated more than one knife in a single post, but haven't numbered them, please edit that in. Thanks.

Peter - you're right about Lin.

Also, thanks for the DH3 nominees, folks. :D

Great submissions so far. This is always my favorite thread of the year. Here's another outstanding piece that I got the priviledge to see first hand:

For your consideration, here are a couple of shots of Kyle Royer's first MS knife, affectionately called The Mediator. First pic is by Caleb Royer and second pic is by Coop.

13" blade that is 3/8" thick, forged from 1080 and 15N20. Mosaic Damascus pattern on the top two thirds of the blade with the blade edge of Twist Mosaic Damascus.
The fittings are Twist Mosaic that is in a tighter pattern than the blade. German Silver liners in full Vine pattern filework.
The blade has eight solid 14k gold pins and the handle has four solid 14k gold pins.
This knife is a take-down for maintenance purposes. The balance point is on the ricasso.
Royer sheath with gator skin, spine intact, overlay.

Lots of excellent knives, but theres just something about Bagwell bowie.....something different!

this is getting insane. Nice work folks!

Rob C, since you were nice enough to let me handle that Royer...I couldn't steal you thunder away from nominating it yourself!

this is going to be tough as I nominated 8 knives and would have nominated far more if others didn't beat me to it!!

So much talent in these makers it makes you lightheaded!

Wow Wow Wow! Thanks to Roger and Lorien and to all that have posted. What a year - I don't remember the last time I spent this much time with my mouth hanging open. Voting is going to be very difficult indeed!

#1 - Bruce Bump, Steven Rapp, Brian Hochstrat 2011 CKCA Cancer Benefit Bowie ~ One of the most beautiful knives and sheaths created in any year:

#2 - Jason Knight Dressed Up Founder's Bowie ~ This is a pleasure for the eye's but can't be fully appreciated until held in the hand. Proof that a beautiful fully dressed out custom knife can still perform to the highest standard:

#3 - Bill Moran Damascus ST-24 ~ One of the most famous and outstanding knife designs of all time and this is perhaps the best example of such (obviously not made in 2011, but made it debut on the BF in 2011):

#4 - Curt Erickson / Julie Warenski ~ Rendition of a rare Michael Price California Bowie:

Nice work Sam.

Excellent entries guys. Rob, that Royer piece is off the hook. The Loerchner SanFrancisco piece is the very definition of sublime, while the Lurqukin Tsava Bowie is the very definition of badass. Big fan of that Newton D-guard as well.

Voting is going to be exceedingly difficult for me.

WOW!!! This looks to be the strongest line-up so far. It is going to be VERY difficult to come up with a "short list"!

I have no idea how to judge this. They are all beautiful in some way, and all of them demostrate skillfullness. But just having started reading this forum the later part of this year I wonder what factors most people use to judge? How does the work load and volume of knives made each year vary between the makers? Or is much more simple than that; as in "Vote for the damn knife you like best?"

I will be reading this thread next year for sure. :D

No set criteria for voting - each member gets to select up to 7 knives that they feel should advance to the final round. They select the knives that appeal to them most for the reasons that matter to them most. Nothing wrong with voting for the best damn knives (at this stage) that you like. In fact, that's more or less the whole point. Once all the voting from the nomination round is completed, the 5 knives with the most votes will advance to the finals, from which the single winner will be selected by a separate open poll.

I find the selection of the 5 finalists to be the hardest part. Usually, there is one finalist that appeals to me most - though last year I sat on the fence for quite a while trying to decide between two.

Voting will start when nominations close - I suspect no later than tomorrow morning, unless the pace of nominations picks up. There are always some great late entries - post 'em if you got 'em.

Roger
