BladeForums BEST BOWIE - 2011 Edition - Voting CLOSED, Finalists Selected

Jim, thank you for including the bowie, and I have always loved those Hill Pearce knives. That second one with the exagerrated coffin hilt and wicked blade just has me drooling. SO many great knives, talk about tough choices. Roger thank you for the thread again. Really talented makers and amazing knives.

Thanks for pointing stuff out that I missed, gents - it can be hard to catch all duplications and such. It has been brought to my attention that the Newton D-Guard in post 73, Knife #5, was nominated in last year's Best Bowie thread (post 4, Knife #5 of the 2010 competition) and is thus ineligible this year.

It remains an outstanding knife in any year.

Some great late entries - as we seem to see every year. I hope to wake up to a few more. Then the hard part - and the fun part - begins. :D

Roger

Man, this is going to be crazy difficult! So many wicked pieces to fixate on.

Roger, thanks for the "big eyes" on the Royer. Jeff, you are one of the few folks who got to feel the balance on that beast. Kyle's handle work on this one is like a great carry melt job on a custom 1911, smooooooth.

Coop, I'm lovin' that first Hill Pearce. You don't really want to keep that one in your Pearce museum do you?

And while I'm beggin', Joe R. are you ready to turn over that blue handled Hanson to your Irish/Japanese brother :D

And to whoever has the green handled Hanson, I'll slap fight Jon Brand for the right to buy it :beaten: Bet he knocks me out to get it.

Better stop or I'll have a list of 20 knives from this thread that I'm begging folks to let go of.

Rob, your a crazy man and would probably defeat me in battle. (crazy as a compliment :) ) But that knife is so nice I would definately try. I have trouble calling it a bowie, but whatever it is, I think its my favorite Hanson fixed blade EVER. Or maybe its my favorite ivory ever. I have no idea but the knife is mind blowing.

I have just a few more nominations to make, if you don't mind.

Ahhh, its that time of year again. Bowie after beautiful Bowie! This thread is the Gem of Bladeforums and the bar is higher than ever before. Please vote for mine.:D

Wow - someone was busy last night! Good stuff.

Okay gang, we are now closed to additional entries - let the selection of finalists begin!

Once again, a BIG THANK YOU for all the nominations. And a special thanks to those makers who posted up their work – the most we have had to date. This is a spectacular assembly of knives by any measure – and no doubt the decisions will be tough. Each year, this thread is what you make it - and you all have made it pretty great.

The fun continues with what I think will be the hardest and most interesting part - narrowing it down to five finalists. The procedure will be the same as before:

1) Each member may submit up to 7 suggested finalists. You don't have to submit as many as 7, but don't submit any more than 7. Please take your time to carefully review all the knives.

2) Please include the post number where your selected knife can be found, and the number of the knife within that post if more than one knife is presented therein - this will help clear up any uncertainty in the case where there are multiple knives by a given maker among the initial entries. For example - a say post number 30 has 4 knives. You want the third. Put "Post 30, #3". AND DON'T FORGET TO INCLUDE THE NAME OF THE MAKER!

3) Your order or selection doesn't matter - one vote per knife up to seven, each vote counts.

4) Please feel free to include a few words about what appeals to you about any given selection. THIS is what makes the selection process most interesting.

5) When all votes are in, we add up the numbers (each time a knife is put forward by someone as a finalist, that effectively counts as one vote for that knife) and the top 5 will be voted on by polll in a new thread.

Roger

PS - If anything is unclear, please ask early.

I'll add in my votes later - have at it gents - some tough choices lie ahead!

Post 3, Knife 4, Joe Blow, Stag Bowie

Post 20, Knife 1, John Doe, Ivory / damascus fighter

Post 32, knife 7, Joe Doe, carbon steel bowie with crazy hamon

Lorien (my Magnus fanatic brother-in-arms)

First, thank you for doing the heavy lifting with Roger to make this an event I look forward to as much as the holidays each year. It brings another "family" together for a grand, fun time.

Dayum man, I thought I was going to strain my brain picking from this thread prior to you weighing in with that string of powerhouses. My brain is shorting out!

This is going to take some serious forethought and consideration.
