Bladeforums BEST BOWIE 2014 - Voting CLOSED - Finalists Selected!

Coop, the knives shown in post 86/7 by John White should qualify as a pair as well as 2014, and they have the same owner. The light handle was first and the dark handle came a few months later. The concept was for a matched pair even to the sheaths and materials.

^^^ Thanks for this important info, Paul. Got it!

Folks: In case you weren't already aware, Paul made the two exemplary sheaths for that set.

Since Multiple Knives, (series, sets, pairs) now qualify, I assume the name will need to be changed next year to Bladeforums Best Bowies of 2015.

Well, here's several of mine.

Twist damascus and african blackwood:

Hey Kevin, so far there are only two instances…The Tsavo project, and John Whites dog bone pair.

As I see it if any one of the Tsavos were to win then they would all share in the honor by default, because the only difference in any of them is the choice and/or color of handle material. I think someone voting for the Tsavo is really voting more for the unique concept, than any one of the particular knives.

John White's pair is even more simple, because the knives are so identical except for the handle color. They were even made from the same billet. I have even greater respect for the talent required to make by hand, TWO of anything that far apart in time that are that identical…………….So a vote for one is essentially a vote for the other, take your choice.

Since this happened to be a couple of unique situations, I don't see any reason to change anything, name or otherwise. We are all adults and can figure this out pretty well I think.

To carry this one short step further, one of the main purposes of this thread is to honor the maker, and in each of these cases there is only one maker and one style involved.

Best regards,

Paul

Paul, it really doesn't matter to me either way. I made my post tongue & cheek as I didn't see any reason to change anything either. Only nominating individual bowies in past BF Best Bowie contests seemed to be simple, fair and be consistent with the contest name.

Well said Paul. And for the sake of accuracy, serial knives are not just "now" permitted. Such projects in the past from the likes of Wheeler and Knight have been nominated and have made the finals. Whether anyone complained in the past about those entries I don't presently recall, but the precedent was set some time ago.

Thanks for the additional info on the John White pair - a magnificent set indeed.

Great job on the additional entries, gents. Don't hold back - some time tomorrow we will get down to the business of selecting this year's finalists.

Two more submissions from me

Both knives belong to Sam Lurquin

1) Adam DeRosier

I can't remember exactly how we ran this thing last year, but I'll be back in 'the office' tomorrow evening to read up and remind myself, and then put up the voting thread.

Smoke em if you got em gents. You got till tomorrow evening to make sure your favourite bowie receives its nomination!

Agreed... that is sweet, the Aldrich bowie! Man is this going to be a tough one figuring out nominations!? :roll eyes:

QUOTE=Matthew Gregory;14280087]I call bull$h17 on this statement - that knife EMBODIES a Bowie knife, to me. Super clean lines, beautiful without being overdone, classic form, elegant and deadly at the same time. It definitely needs to be in this thread!!!

Hey Lorien - the initial voting for finalists will take place in this thread. I'll close off nominations tomorrow (get yours in!) and get the voting started. I'll ask for your help tallying the votes for the finalists, which usually runs over two days or so.

Once the finalists have been indentified, I'll then ask you to create a new thread to vote among the finalist for the overall winner. That will be done by open poll as in years past.

I hesitated on posting this one of mine as the photography isn't the greatest but it has enough of a unique design that I thought that some might enjoy seeing it.
