BladeForums.Com is shutting down! PLEASE READ!

Clay Kesting,

I understand your concern and I am in no way punishing you on the basis of where you live. But vice versa I can not justify shipping a FREE gift to Austrailia on a subscription which will only cost $29.95. The USPS EMS shipping is $32.00 to Austrailia.

Let's look at this for a second using a cheaper shipping method.
Global Priority is $16.95 to Austrailia.
Lets say you choose the SeberTool M2. It costs me $8.65.
Total actual cost $25.60 not including the box/packing or sending someone down to the post office to mail it.

Sorry guy but I can't justify it. You will still be able to get the magazine and I am only asking $29.95 per year, $2.49 a month.

why don't you guys sell custom knives, like knifeart.com. i'm sure that would generate some bills. i'm sure alot of the knifemakers, that are on the shop talk forums, would sell knives to you guys, for you to sell and make some money from.

Maybe if you limited eligibility for the monthly giveaways to the members who actively support the forums? I hate to be so mercenary about this issue, but that may be what it takes to bring some of the more reluctant members out of the woodwork...I suspect that the giveaways were the enticement a lot a people needed to make their first posting.

I was glad to subscribe early...since I don't have a "real" life, these forums have provided me with a lot of pleasure

. Thirty bucks isn't a lot of money to spend for the educational and entertainment content of this place. C'mon guys, let's make sure that the forumites don't get written up as an "ugly" entry on the GB&U forum...

How could I NOT subscribe ? After all, the baby has been named after me

But it just gonna have to wait until after Xmas.....

So here is what you need to do Brian. Go order the magazine and under the payment section select money order. This way I can track it.

Cool? And when I come to Austrailia you better give me a good tour

I want to thank each of you for subscribing.

I may need to be more clear on what and why I am doing this. The following is from a business point of view so if it does not make since I apologize ahead of time.

Businesses of all types run on a asset -vs- liability type of operation. They also use a profit -vs- loss statement each month, P&L for short. On the months we sold the BF Native, the Busse and the Sifu for the first time we showed a decent profit. However on the other months we showed significant losses. The magazine will hopefully balance this wide swing out a bit and add stability to our marketing efforts.

BladeForums is basically a complete liability for me at this point. I don't mind it so much as long as it stayed at about $1,000 a month loss. The banners we run made up for part of that. That was about 8 months ago. A few weeks ago I looked at BFC again and man did I freak out! It is costing me nearly $2,500 a month to run this site! At the rate we are growing it would soon cost $5,000 a month! So I needed to implement a plan that would help defray the costs and keep the doors open. Other sites have already failed, and no I don't just mean KFC.

UBB the software we use to run this site is also used on other sites. People love to talk!
We are one of the busiest sites around using this software.

And they don't realize how much talking costs. Someone has to pay the bills. So far it has been me and the profits from the few items we sell. The accessories we sell simply don't cut it. So I had to look towards something else. The magazine seemed and seems to be the answer. If I have 1,000 people paying about $2.49 a month then we would break even right now. But that is no realistic plus we have to give away FREE stuff (which also costs money) to get people to sign up.

So we need to do several things.

I know it may be frustrating to see the deals we offer sometimes and it may appear a bit commercial but we need to do this to survive.

So starting very soon you will see many new offers and new ways we will have to make money. At the same time you will get killer deals!

Geez, Mike…I appreciate the sentiment and I'm really glad to be here, but I think you've got me confused with someone else. I've never even visited rec.knives, much less posted! (Heck, after all the horror stories I've heard about it, I'd be afraid to go there…I'm a timid li'l fella
wink.gif
). Sincerely, check my profile/IP address…I think you must be thinking of someone else who may have used the same handle on the other site (unbeknownst to me).

Jim

Oppsss... Sorry Jim. There was a guy on rec.knives using the name UglyJim. Thought it was you. My bad.

Oh ya I almost forgot. I do read those little notes you guys put in the special instruction part of our order form.

To each of you who have offered kind words I say thanks, Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanza and Happy New Year!

Mike,

I understand your point about the free gift however what ticked me off was that the BF store will no longer ship to "foreign" countries (I don't feel very foreign
smile.gif
).

I'll happily pay for shipping, ordinary air-mail parcel is fine, should only be about $5.00. Better also tell you that I want the SeberTool.

Clay,

If you show me how I can ship to Austrailia for $5 I will be happy! I am willing to do what I can but to date I have yet to see a $5 shipping option to Austrailia or any other country.

The reason we stopped shipping international is do to credit card fraud.

Hey Mike, as you know, I already put in my order a couple of days ago. I encourage all of you who read this to do so!

I do have one suggestion though. I saw a guy who's has a "coupon" site and he puts his All Advantage referral number on top and encourages people to sign up and do the all advantage thing. With the number of people here on BFC, you can earn so much money.... They guy on the other site earns $600 + dollars a month!! And All Advantage pays!

Just e-mail me if you want more details.
Oh yeah, the site, in case you want to check it out is www.gotapex.com and just go to deals... on the top you can see his earnings... I think that could bring in mucho bucks and all people have to do is just have it open while surfing BFC!!! Annoying banners are already immune to us, so it should be ok.

Cool? Cool.! BTW, I got the SeberTOOL!!

I am going to help by advertising. Can you capture the banner from my website front page and use it as it is?

Thanks

You can ship lightweight stuff (under a pound) from the USA to places like Europe, Australia, etcetera by stuffing it in a padded envelope, putting the appropriate airmail postage on it, and dropping it in any mailbox. No paperwork, no tracking of course. Postage for six ounces is $5.

If you want insurance and/or trackability, the price for overseas shipping increases dramatically, and you have to fill out a customs form. Also, the post office clerk at the counter will ask you to fill out a customs form. The mailbox won't.

The problem with that, James, is overseas fraud and theft. The first time that one of the knives comes up missing, especially in the case of a $100 native or $200 Sifu, we're screwed. We don't make that much money that we can repeatedly eat the cost of knives going missing. We already have experienced many knives "gone missing" to overseas addresses, and that doesn't help our bottom line.
