We gots more work to do if we need a 100.

I think we could do it, but we may need help to spread the word around the forum.

I didn't vote for the Barlow. In fact it is one of my least favorite designs.

To get to the point, I think you are wanting a Barlow with:
2 equal (or close) blades, 1 being a Wharncliffe.
3.5" + size, with Bone/Stag or Micarta handles.
1095 blades, or other carbon steel.

Well, I like ALL of that. If it can come in that way I bet allot of people (including myself) who shy away when you say "Barlow" would take a second look. 100 may not be hard to sell.

Gus and Steven,

Thanks for putting all the hard work into this! Seems like you're knee deep in the thankless part of this job. Just a suggestion - anyone who has thoughts on an alternate pattern should hold onto it, that way it's easier to get info from Gus and Steven. I know that I hate looking at threads over 5 pages long (unless it's a photo thread).

Trouble is. We do not get these to sell. We get commitments and payments up front and place the order quantity for the number for which we have payments.
No money is being made by the organizers.

The Barlow has a long bolster at the pivot end and no bolster at the butt. The teardrop jack usually has a short bolster at each end. That's my understanding, anyway.

Queen has responded that it will take a few days to work up a quote, but at least they did not say "NO" outright.

The problem is that there is a "setup" charge of $500.00 if we don't order 100 knives.

IF we get a commitment of 75 knives once a pattern proposal is in hand, we need to figure out if we can "float" the additional 25 knives....it is also dependant upon price.

Gus and I both collect custom knives, so "sticker shock" for what we want is virtually non-existent anymore, but that might not be the case for some of the Forumites interested in this knife.

Guys, the kudos and positive thoughts are really appreciated, but not necessary. If we successfully pull this off, and the majority is happy...at that point telling us that your firstborn children will be named Steven Gus(fill in the blank) or Gus Steven (fill in the blank) will be icing on the cake.:D

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

I don't want to leave the wrong impression. I didn't use the word "sell" to imply that anyone was profiting in a monetary sense, I know that is not the case.

No problem.:)

"Spreading the word" is, in one sense, something I do in my professional life. In one sense.;)

Hopefully, Queen will come through. If not, maybe we can ask AG for his advice. Or give Boker a call.

God Bless

depends on what the knife turns out to be, and the price, but I bet I could dredge up at least one, maybe a couple more folks to buy in.

If we can't get a 100-knife order together, the set-up fee could be divided equally among the people who order. If we are looking at a 60-knife order (just picked the number out of the air) it would add less than $10 to the cost of the knife. That would be less than buying two knives.

Just thought it was worth a mention . . .

I'd definitely be willing to go along with popedandy's excellent suggestion:thumbup:

If it comes down to the wire, I'd be willing to swing for two knives as well.

That is true...the cost CAN be divided up....we are trying to put ourselves in the mindset of someone who really appreciates fine cutlery, but for whom an "extra" $10-15 represents a real burden.

Part of the difficulty and challenge of assuming this type of responsibility(as I am sure previous Club knife facilitators can attest to) is that you try and see the "big picture" with as much clarity and forward thinking vision as possible......and are never truly on top of it, so you try to get as close as you can.

Seeing how I recently became employed again after my layoff :D, and depending on the cost of the knife I would kick in for two.

I missed out on the other forum knives. But not this time.

I would'nt mind an extra 10-15 bucks for a forum knife. Cause I luv this bar.. I mean forum.

What we should have done was talked Kerry out of his contest, and as a similar give back to the communtity kinda thing; talked him into a discount on a limited run of barlows.. :D

Kerry would probably do the Barlows for free just because he wants the practice. Heck, he's so lacking in confidence at the moment that he's giving knives away. Just trying to help you out, Kerry ;)

Hope Queen comes through for us. (waiting.............)
