Blades & Bourbon

Beautiful pic!
I've become a basic bourbon lover in my early 50's, and searching for the ones with the more caramel/toffee/etc notes for my sweet tooth, so I tend to stay away from the high Rye types.
The Woodford Reserve Double Oaked is my go to "sure thing" for the past year. I have over 10 empty bottles in the garage.
I even see empty bottles for sale on FleaBay!
I don't go any lower in price/quality, so my journey is gonna get expensive.
Would of never thought I'd get ideas on my next purchase in a knife forum. ;) 😄

I've got everything but the Old Rip on hand... I'll swap in a bottle of Jefferson Presidential Select - you can have your choice of 17 or 18yr
Unfortunately it needs to be the whole set or I won't be able to post it on Instagram for likes...

Your loss - the Jefferson's Reserve Presidential Select is awesome stuff that has been unavailable years. It's a wheater sourced from aged Stitzel Weller stock. (Stitzel Weller did the Van Winkle brand before Buffalo Trace.). When the SW sourced barrels were near depleted, it came out that future releases would start incorporating rye; and I snatched up several bottles. I don't think they ever added the rye... and I don't recall seeing any more of the Presidential Select.

Lol I know what it is. But the only time I spend thousands on whisky is when I'm buying it by the barrel. You are lucky to have gotten so many high quality bottles!

I wouldn't have paid these ridiculous prices, lol - I grabbed them before the distributor and store owners got greedy. Buffalo Trace's suggested retail for the 6 bottles in that ad is approximately $900 combined. That's nine hundred...

I had a conversation with a Van Winkle representative when prices started going up locally, and he suggested that I complain to the State Attorney General about the price gouging. The wording in the definition of price gouging didn't seem to apply; so I didn't bother pursuing it. (Those prices have about tripled locally since that time)
Hopefully, BT's shift to another distributor and increased production will help stem the madness...but I doubt the PVW and BTAC collections will drop in price

I heard about the distribution change, my friend said they are going to expand production of the premium lines, but I wonder how much it can expand without affecting quality

Try Angels Envy Rye - ignore that fact its rye, caramel, toffee, and creme brulee are the main flavors. its aged in rum barrels

Let's hope somethign changes. Here the stores are state controlled - all prices are MSRP, if you can actually get them. people run around snatching up all the BT, blantons, etc. that they can so they can resell to the next tater with extra money and no real sense. Stuff like BT, Eagle Rare, Bookers is limited to on per person per day. the really rare stuff, Van Winkle, Parkers, Stagg are run through a lottery system, but still MSRP.
I've been lucky enough to score a couple of van winkle options = the 13 year rye is possibly the best I've had - but there are so many options out there that are worth our time and money that I'm not sweating it.

keeping with the picture theme (sorry no knife). here is one from a blind tasting we put togther a while back. Crown Royal 16 year rye was the crowd favorite

I actually preferred the Masterson's to the Angels Envy rye.
I've got about half a bottle of Sazerac 18 left (had totally forgotten about it until I saw it the other day) - I'll have to have some of that this weekend.

All I know is that, when this closing happens (first and second dates have passed), I'm going to relax with something nice to celebrate my newfound freedom.

Which bottle don't you already have? The Old Rip 10? Which ever 1 it is, how much are you willing to pay for it?

If it's "enough,"I'd consider buying the set and sending you the bottle.

BTW, sales tax in San Rafael is 9.25% so you'd have to factor that in as well, unless you can buy it direct from out of state w/o tax and then send me the other bottles for the net.

I appreciate the offer; but Old Rip doesn't hold much appeal to me (at the current price). I've got a couple bottles of Weller Antique, and maybe 5 bottles of the aforementioned Jefferson's Reserve Presidential Select.

One good turn deserves another, though. If you are willing to buy that group to sell me one, I would be remiss in not asking how much you want the other 5. I'm viewing this as a fun dialog; but if you're interested - we'd better take it to PM before running afoul of the mods.

$16k for the group actually seems like a "reasonable" price given what I've seen of the asking price for the bottles individually.

I'd be willing to sell the Pappy 23 and the Van Winkle 13 Rye.

I've seen a wide variety of prices for these bottles but I'm skeptical of the cheaper pricing -- too many fakes being offered for sale out there. Prices also vary for the Pappy 15/20/23 depending on the year that they were bottled (higher prices for earlier bottlings) but w/o knowing more . . .

$5k is what I'd want for the Pappy 23 and I'd also sell the Van Winkle 13 Rye for $2.5k. I'd be happy to pick up the other 4 bottles for "just" $8.5K.

Interested? Probably not but we're just talking "trash"anyway, aren't we? LOL! ;)

Anybody paying over $500 for these bottles is nuts, it's good stuff, but it's just alcohol.

They're "collector items" to me. I have no plans to drink any of them. Just like I don't "use" any of the knives in my collection.

And, I still have 10 bottles of hard to get bourbon that I've never opened.

LOL! ;)

People here routinely pay over $500 for knives. Why is $500 for a bottle of bourbon any different?

Guys are also buying G&G OTF Deadlocks for over $1.5-$3k which is something that I'd never consider but, to me, paying that much for a bourbon that I plan to keep and never drink and maybe resell later is different.

I've got the $. It's just whether I want to spend it or not.

Because that's the normal price for a knife. But paying 5 to 10x the price is silly, just like the people paying dumb money for instagram knives. Also you can use most knives and they still retain a decent value. If you open that bottle, all that perceived value is gone.

You can resell knives legally, much harder with alcohol. You would need to find someone who is licensed to buy collections and would not receive even half what "market" value was.

The curve of diminishing returns exists with alcohol and knives alike. That's not to say those wouldn't be wonderful to drink or fun to collect. It's just that they wouldn't make me that much happier than a neat glass of one of these more affordable bourbons pictured below. (It's an older picture but showcases all of the bourbons in my cabinet.) It's a little easier to drain my wallet with scotch but not by much. Once a bottle goes over a $100, I have to check myself and ask if I really care. The answer is almost always "no".

I often carry decent-quality budget knives for the same reason. I do have and carry some much more expensive knives but at least with those, I get to enjoy them fully and still have them years down the road. Hell, my kids will get to inherit most of them and they could go further than that.
