Holy crap, that is beautiful!

Wildfire smoke, rain, and some projects I needed to complete kept me out of the mountains this week; but I did go on a couple of nice hikes over the past couple of weeks that I keep forgetting to post.

The first was about 11 miles total and up just under 5,000ft to a pair of Alpine Lakes, thought the trail takes you up to a peak, then down into the lake basin, then back up to the next lake.

Up...

Then finally down, into the lake

As you can see, the lake was in the clouds today, as it often is here.

Then on and up to the next lake. Only a small percentage of hikers go beyond the first, so although the second lake is smaller it's always worth the effort for the solitude.

Got there around 12:30, so I broke fast with some bison jerky I made the night before and handfuls of wild berries that were plentiful around the lake. Relaxed at the lake for a while before heading back.

Back at the first lake I found a nice spot and decided to take an impromptu cold plunge

Beautiful scenery. Almost and in some ways better than southern swamps.

Then last week, during somewhat of a heatwave, my son and I went on what was supposed to be only a 7 mile hike up to a waterfall on Rainier to beat the heat, but turned out to be much more.

it was a pretty steep trail up to the waterfall, rated as difficult, be we didn't think it was too bad, and the prism effect of the stunning waterfall was certainly worth it.

Then, we ran into an old timer that told us about an unmaintained rocky boot path that goes above the waterfall. There you can get closer to the peak of Rainier, and also have a great view of the surrounding peaks. The best part is hardly anyone knows about it, so when you head up there you get the place completely to yourself, quite the luxury considering this is within a popular National Park.

Despite the heat, doubling our intended hike, and the fact that this would be taking us above the comfort of the refreshing water, we just couldn't resist the call to go explore the place, and man were we glad we did.

On the way up, if you look behind you, you can see St. Helens in the distance.

A little further and the peak of Rainier shows itself

Then, finally you are in a wonderland, and you have the place all to yourself

Plus 360 degrees of stunning view (Mt. Adams in the distance)

Luckily on the way back down we could cool off in the icy cold snow/glacier fed water. What a day

Indeed. I love it out here but the swamps are in my blood. Just booked my ticket to spend all of Feb back home in FL, btw ๐Ÿ‘
