Then last week, during somewhat of a heatwave, my son and I went on what was supposed to be only a 7 mile hike up to a waterfall on Rainier to beat the heat, but turned out to be much more.
it was a pretty steep trail up to the waterfall, rated as difficult, be we didn't think it was too bad, and the prism effect of the stunning waterfall was certainly worth it.
Then, we ran into an old timer that told us about an unmaintained rocky boot path that goes above the waterfall. There you can get closer to the peak of Rainier, and also have a great view of the surrounding peaks. The best part is hardly anyone knows about it, so when you head up there you get the place completely to yourself, quite the luxury considering this is within a popular National Park.
Despite the heat, doubling our intended hike, and the fact that this would be taking us above the comfort of the refreshing water, we just couldn't resist the call to go explore the place, and man were we glad we did.
On the way up, if you look behind you, you can see St. Helens in the distance.
A little further and the peak of Rainier shows itself
Then, finally you are in a wonderland, and you have the place all to yourself
Plus 360 degrees of stunning view (Mt. Adams in the distance)
Luckily on the way back down we could cool off in the icy cold snow/glacier fed water. What a day
