I finished this third novel in King's "detective trilogy" a couple of weeks ago. It was an OK story, but I had trouble getting past the author's complete disregard for the challenges and nuances of the "mind-body problem" philosophers have debated for centuries. The "bad guy" in the book has no difficulty shifting his mind/consciousness/soul from his own body to someone else's body, and back again, at will. He can even "chain" these shifts, sending out his mind to someone else and then from there to a third person, etc. (And this is all facilitated by a wi-fi enabled Game Boy-like device.)

I wonder what ever happened to Lori Singer, speaking of something that reminds me of her all too short-lived show, VR5.

Fodderwing, You just cost me some money! Had to order my copy of "Scouting on Two Continents". I read it a long time ago and seem to remember him writing about being in South Africa, local witch doctor stirring up the local tribe claiming he could make magic to protect the tribesmen from bullets. Burnham sneaks into the village and into a cave the witch doctor is living in. As the witch doctor starts telling the tribesmen how his magic will protect them, Burnham jumps up, says "He lies" and shoots the witch doctor dead. The part that got me was Burnham gets away using a trick and says something like " I used a trick to get away from the tribesmen, but it would have fooled the Apaches". Of course he does not say what the trick was! John

When I read that Teddy Roosevelt would sit in silence for an hour listening to Burnham tell a tale I knew he was bound to be a good writer too. BTW he wrote another book you may not be aware of about his adventures - "Taking Chances". I have it but I haven't read it yet.
