I must get a copy of this. However don't know who made the cover art, you won't find brown bears in the Appalachians. Plenty of black bears though, just hit them on the nose with a good stick. My great grandmother kept a thick hickory stick by the back door painted like a candy cane. That's what she used to chase them off.:eek:

I agree. The brown bear was a bit of artistic license for the cover art. It is a fun read. The book was written by a guy who was not quite physically or mentally prepared for the AT experience. I have hiked several hundred miles of it, which is enough to know that I am not about to try to do the whole thing.
 
Carried this book all through basic training, has some nice rust patina on the metal binder from marching in the rain. "Prepare the Man" wouldn't be allowed today! This book has everything in it from how to fold and arrange your socks in equal thirds (only inspection I failed in basic) to M16 machine gun operation and maintenance (marksman thanks to Uncle Sam). Many folks probably still have their book from basic, but still saving that along with my basic training clothing marking kit (complete with both bottles of dried up ink, stamp, and pad) after almost 43 years made me ponder why? Hmmm … no wonder I collect knives. Anyhow, my favorite carry and it's new little lockback buddy tascosa.
