Spiked again today, I can actually hear it in my ears. :( Headache, dizzy, and cant calm down.

Any hypertension tips for me, well besides not letting some people get to me? From now on I am NOT taking the bait.

If this keeps up a stroke is in my future, or worse.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks hogs!

Make exercise a priority in your daily living. Less salt, more hydration and lay off the booze. Use relaxation techniques. Learn to say 'no' more frequently. Use Lisinopril.

How high is your blood pressure? If its >160 then you have to do everything in the above posts: eat less salt, eat vegetables, exercise 30 mins a day by walking or more vigorous activity if you can, take blood pressure medication. Practice slow deep breathing exercises when stressed. If its closer to 140 then you can make more minor changes like just focusing on diet or exercise. High blood pressure does its damage over time, you need to control it over time and that means lifestyle changes more so than quick fix it tips.

Take the medication your doc recommends. Apart from that I'd set these priorities...

1. lose weight
2. reduce salt
3. practice some sort of endurance sport
4. quit smoking
5. reduce alcohol consumption
6. warn your children that they are a risk group since you might have passed it on to them genetically

Most important: don't let the change in lifestyle stress you. Do what you have to do and enjoy doing it :)

Everything will be good

Mate, I've had some similar things happen to me in recent times. The best thing that seems to work for me is to shut the world out for a few minutes. Just stop, and listen to the world. Shut your eyes and concentrate on one sound, it could be anything. The fridge humming, a bird twittering, the tv in another room, whatever. Focus on it for a little bit. Then expand the listening to another sound and focus on it with the original sound. Slowly let the world of sounds around you in again and listen to the whole thing. Then open your eyes and take some deep breaths and carry on with whatever you were doing. You must really concentrate on that first sound and put everything else out of your mind. It can take bit to get the hang of, but once you suss it out, it's a good little bit of self cognetive thought processing to get you on the right track again. Works for me anyway :) Hope it helps you too.

Take Wild Salmon Fish Oil, 4 times a day, Flax Seed Oil, 2 times a day. I would also consider a complete Amino Acid regiment and some BCAA( Branch Chain Amino Acid ) on the side, a couple times a day, as I guarantee, you will feel better. Take 1 Resveratrol a day. Take 1 baby asprin a day ( optional) if your Stomach is okay with Asprin. I dropped my Blood Pressure 28 point's in 1 Month doing this and I smoke on top of it. Educate yourself about the food/poison they are selling and take the step's to buy food that is good for you. Try and cut back on Processed food, Junk Food, High Fructose Corn Syrup. Buy some Stevia extract and cut your Sugar intake, it's a Healthy alternative to Sugar, that is actually good for your teeth as a bonus. Eat Oatmeal every morning or as much as you can tolerate and/or alternate with Raisan Brand. Do this, and call me in a Month :D

All of the above and pray for the people who piss you off. Sounds frivolous, but works well for me. Puts me in a better place. I have auto-immune issues, fight anxiety disorders and get pissed off easily. Venting to a friend is what saves me much of the time too. You have my email and I can give ya my phone # Dwayne.
Your friend, Mike

I recommend old video games with chainsaws and settings for extra gore.

And a glass of red wine with dinner.

Lots of great suggestions. Seriously. Go to your physician and explain your symptoms. This kind of presentation requires a more thorough workup. Lipid panel, EKG, serial BP's, stuff like that. Chronic hypertension is no joke.

A lot of good posts already. May I suggest, if you do not already have one, get a puppy. An active breed that grows no larger than you want to manage. Before you know it, between walking and playing fetch, you should see some benefits to both physical and attitduinal health.

All the suggestions have merit but one thing for sure, do whatever you can to try and get it under control. If you can "hear" it in your ears, that's more than some mild hypertension. I have been battling mine since my 20's,everyone from my dad's side of the family have passed on from heart related issues,my dad included.
He had his first heart attack @ 50(I'm 51!) and quadruple bypass a year later. I see my cardio every month, try to exercise as much as possible(walking is best)
take my meds, stay the hell away from salt etc.. Although you may not be using the salt shaker, start checking labels and you will be shocked at how much sodium is in EVERYTHING! I am a ketchup , hot sauce, tomatoe sauce junkie and those condiments are killer for sodium. Some teriyaki or soy with your Chink food and you might as well just dump a salt shaker into your mouth!
Ask your cardio about getting on some anti-water retention drugs, especially if you notice swollen ankles. They also help get the sodium out of your body.
Finally,go for a full cardio work up as suggested. Lipid panel, nuclear stress test ,CRP(very key),the works. I have even had a couple of angioplasty's over the
years but no stents yet. Not to scre you,nut this shit really will drop you dead without warning. Stroke,MI's,are other events with devastating consequences.

I may not know much about knives but consider myself well versed in matters of hypertension and cardio. Ton's of info available but one must sift through the fantasy crap and the real info.. Consider a raw diet for a bit as well. Fruits, veggies, unrefined, unprocessed foods.

I wish you better health and sanity. Stay away from issues and folks who tend to spike your BP as well.
MAke sure you request a doppler for you carotid arteries as well.

Your med's and dietary changes take things so far ... the anti-dote to surges of blood pressure caused by stress may well be "unique" to you. Prayer can work well if you have a deep faith ... exercise designed to minimise stress and improve breathing and the release of the right chemicals in the brain is an alternative. I find that oriental techniques are very effective for me. The pathways to achieve these things are many and varied. Think about what "calms" you ... scenary ? activity ? meditation ? discussion ? prayer ?
Go with your instincts as to what you think will work for you. You need to respect what you choose ... from personal experience things you find you are sceptical of won't work.

Mediatation and prayer are not easy for me ... exercise rewarded by scenary and beauty combined with the time to be able to appreciate them ... that set's my day off well.

I get up early and do a walk in the hills ... helps if you have a dog ... combination of exercise/scenary reward / simple affection from my dog ... brought my heart beat at resting down to 51 and lost 3 stone. I walk about 4-6 miles every morning ... then get home and whilst warmed up do a series of kata's within my martial art together with breathing and Chi exercises ... keeping it simple can be a good starting point ... it takes a couple of hours to do and I leave for work early. It means I get up just before dawn. For some reason over the years I now need to sleep very little. 4 to 5 hours is all I need.

Have you tried taking low dose ASA asprin? There is allot of evidence that it is good for the cardiovascular system and for general health. Mention it to your doctor the next time you go.

lifestyle change... Its stressful at first but really the only long lasting solution. all the non-lifestyle changes work to a point. My uncle had a jammer while meditating to relieve stress whilst he was enjoying his eggs Benedict. all the happy thoughts, asprin and pills the doctor gave him never solved his hypertension or his blood cholesterol levels. He opposed diet and exercise as he was too proud. Now I don't have an uncle :(

This may sound totally off the wall, but my female cousin, who is now in her 40s, had horrible BP issues though she was younger (30s at the time), and very thin and fit. When meds and hardcore exercise were not effective (she was as fit as an aerobic instructor), she determined that she had food allergies that caused the severe hypertension. She discovered it by accident, when having her child treated for allergies. She avoids particular foods, and is no longer hypertensive. This is not to say that your issue is related to food allergies, but it could be something you wish to explore.

Its a better morning, many many many thanks for all the advice folks I truly appreciate it.

So far here's what we have deduced, its stress related, started 4 years ago when my father passed. Was already somewhat elevated, but not serious till them.

I do take the little aspirins, cute little buggers. Fish oil once a day but now I might dive in a few times! Going to look at those other supplements as well.

We walk the dogs most every day, my lab loves it, we tether the schnauzer to her and watch the fun as he tries to go where he wants to. :)

Smoking, no. I quit well over 20 years ago, and a Marlboro still smells soooooo nice to me to this day.

Drinking, yea, I need to cut down, too much. I do drink red wine, and I can tell everyone it does work. I felt better after only a few months of a couple of glasses a day.

I did cut out a lot of salt, my body craves it, but I dont eat near what I used to in college.

Cant afford to lose much weight, barely over 150, the little beer belly could stand to go away though. :p

Also cant afford the doc right now, so I'm trying everything I can outside that.

I think the best thing is staying away from people that seem to take a special joy in making people angry. I let myself get baited and I know better, I've been around these parts for over ten years and seen all the tricks, this one was an old one. No more, I never even read the last note and I think its for the best.

Thanks again! I do truly appreciate it.

We must have been writing at the same time! I would have never guessed that an allergy could cause hypertension! Thanks for the info!!! :)
